A Thank You To My Adopted Family

"Because of you, I am the person I wish to be"

A Thank You To My Adopted Family
Madysen E

My biological parents are wonderful people and I wouldn't want to trade them for anyone else. This thank you is to the family friends who adopted me as their own when it was hard for my Mom to be in more than one place, or when my Dad decided that he couldn't be around. It was anything but easy for my Mom to raise my brother and me on her own. With working two jobs I praise her for everything she did because I know we didn't make it easy for her. This is just a thank you to the family friends who helped my Mom to raise my brother and I to who we are today:

Family is arguably the most important part of anyone's life. No matter how big or how small, they don't have to be related by DNA. I was lucky enough that I was granted with two families in addition to my own. That means I have two more women and men in my life that I get to call "Mom and Dad". It might seem like a crazy concept to want to have a total of six different adults looking over your shoulder, but it keeps everyone in check. It also gives me the opportunity to have different people to call on when I need advice or a second opinion about something. It is comforting to know I can count on so many people.

Another plus to having adopted families is all the extra people you get to consider brothers and sisters. In my biological family, I only have one brother, but when I include my adopted siblings I have four brothers and a younger sister. Having that many people around you showing their undivided love and support, even though they aren't actually related by blood or marriage is one of the best feelings. Between the six of us, four of them are younger than me. I have four children constantly looking up to me for advice, encouragement, and guidance along the way. Even though they look up to me, without them I wouldn't be the person I am today because they have helped shape me.

I wanted to be able to say thank you to the family that not only helped my Mom out when she has needed it, but who have helped build me into the person I am now. I don't think I would have any of the same qualities that I do today without them. I wouldn't have had all the experiences I have had today. You guys created a bigger family by what you did and I hope someday I can thank you with more than just my words.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Love,

Madysen

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
