Lately, most celebrity news has been circulating around Ariana Grande's single "Thank U, Next." The music video was released on November 30, 2018. This music video has become famous not only because of it's long list of cameos and pop culture references, but also the record it broke. Ariana Grande's "Thank U, Next" music video broke the YouTube record for the most views in 24 hours, reaching over 55 million views. "Thank U, Next" is also Ariana Grande's first No. 1 single on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart.
The song itself is a hit because of it's message. Instead of writing a breakup song full of anger, hatred, or any other form of negativity, it is full of gratitude. Grande thanks each of her famous exes for what she learned through their relationship and the breakup afterward. She thanks them for helping her learn love, patience, how to deal with pain, and to love herself and have confidence in herself moving forward. This message teaches a great lesson not to just teenage girls, but anyone who has gone through heartbreak or relationships that have gone south. Grande tells listeners to not hold hate in their hearts for the people they no longer have a relationship with, but focus on their own self growth, self love, and to move on healthily.
The video is so wildly popular because of Grande's recreations of four classic movies: Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, 13 Going On 30, and Bring It On. These four early-2000s movies all have large followings and strong female leads. Grande recreated famous scenes from each of these movies throughout her video, to show just some of the different types of strong women she admires. It also references how the teen and young adult drama captured in these movies relates to how being in the spotlight makes life events like breakups so dramatic and speculated.
Another reason for the video's popularity is the massive amount of cameos by Grande's friends and fellow celebrities. In the Mean Girls scenes, there are cameos from Jonathan Bennett, who played Aaron Samuels in the original movie, as well as Stefanie Drummond, who is also from the original cast of Mean Girls. Grande included one of her backup dancers, Scott Nicholson, famous singer Troye Sivan, and YouTuber Gabi DeMartino as other background characters from the movie. Grande took the role of the main mean girl Regina George. She had her friend from her time on the Nickelodeon show "Victorious," Elizabeth Gillies is Cady, and filled the roles of Karen Smith and Gretchen Wieners with her close friends Alexa Luria and Courtney Chipolone. Arguably the most iconic cameo in these scenes is that of Kris Jenner, who plays Amy Poehler's character of Mrs. George. An interesting reference in these scenes is Grande making her own "Burn Book" identical to Regina George's, but she fills it with pictures of her exes that she name drops in the song.
In the scenes recreated from Bring it On, Grande features her friends Alexa Luria and Courtney Chipolone again, alongside famous YouTuber Colleen Ballinger, and another friend and co-star from Victorious, Daniella Monet. Grande also includes other back-up dancers Nekai Johnson, Luz Remigio, and Patience Aquart. Her musical co-workers are also included in these scenes, Tayla Parx and Victoria Monét. Matt Bennett, also from Victorious, is also featured playing the role of Cliff.
The scenes from 13 Going On 30 do not have any celebrity cameos, but Grande recreated Jennifer Garner's look from the movie perfectly, even getting approval from the actress on Twitter.
The scenes from Legally Blonde include a cameo from Jennifer Coolidge, who played Paulette Bonafonté from the original movie. Her scene with Grande includes a recreation of the "bend and snap," which they turn into a dance move called the "thank u next." Another reference made in these scenes is Grande's use of immigration law books as Elle Woods...which is up to viewer's interpretation as of right now but celebrated by many as a political commentary. The use of Legally Blonde in the music video also drives home the message of self-improvement and growth that Grande celebrates in her song.
Every scene has so many things to look at and analyze, and trying to pick out each cameo can be extremely difficult but fun for fans. The amount of dedication and attention to detail put in this music video is phenomenal. Thank U, Ariana for such a powerful song and representing so many iconic characters.
