Since I was only in pre-school when 9/11 happened I decided to write my article this week as a thank you letter to the many people who fought valiantly that day; risking their lives so that they could reunite a father and his family or an elderly lady with her husband of fifty years. Since I am legally an adult now I have brushed up on some history of the U.S. and have realized why it is important to be involved and up to date on events, especially with the election approaching.
Nearly three thousand people lost their lives during this attack and more than six thousand people were injured. 24-year-old, Welles Crowther, should be remembered. He helped over a dozen people and went back in to help the firefighters. A lady that he saved said, “He’s definitely my guardian angel — no ifs, ands or buts — because without him, we would be sitting there, waiting [until] the building came down (Szoldra).” The next people that should be remembered are the people who saved the plane from crashing into the Capitol Building that day. Deena Burnett called her husband, Tom, and told him what was going on with the planes. He responded “we have to do something (Szoldra).” Some of the other passengers, Mark Bingham, Jeremy Glick, and Todd Beamer, learned what Tom learned about the planes. These four men rushed into the cockpit. Because of what these men did the plane crashed into an empty field in Shanksville, PA. Everyone on the plane was killed. They knew they would not survive but risked their lives for their country anyway. I think people need to be less selfish and less materialistic and focus of things that matter. The world would be a better place for it.
Rick Rescorla fought in Vietnam and saved more than 2,700 lives on 9/11. He kept the people calm by singing “God Bless America” and “Men of Harlech”. He was last seen on the tenth floor looking for more people. His body was never found. Army Spc. Beau Doboszenski was a tour guide on the other end of the pentagon when the plane hit. He never heard the plane crash but quickly realized what all of the commotion was about. He was a former firefighter and trained EMT. He responded right away but was stopped by the police. He went around the police to reach a medical triage station, and helped give first aid. He then joined a six-man team that went back in to look for survivors, while the building was still in flames.
I just wanted to thank the many many more people involved in saving lives and helping in any way they could. They deserve the world for their heroic acts. They put their lives on the line and didn’t care because they wanted to help protect their country in any way they could. During these days there were no distinction between race, religion, or class. We all came together as one.
