Dear Brock Turner,
With your recent release from prison, your name has reappeared in the media outlets again. Three months ago you entered into prison and people were expecting/ hoping you would be there for a long while. When I first heard the story, as a college-aged female, I was disgusted. I remember hearing about this story and immediately being infuriated by the whole scenario, infuriated by your parents' reaction to your "20 minutes of action." Now, however, I want to thank you.
I want to thank you for showing the flaws in our justice system. Three months in prison was not an ample amount of time to heal and learn from the mental disorder that is rape. I know, I know, alcohol affects men and women differently and she may have consented earlier in the evening — I don't know the whole situation, but what I do know is that no matter how much alcohol you have had and likewise for your potential partner you don't have sex with people who are unconscious. For that I want to thank you for proving and demonstrating that blaming the victim is not the problem. She was out having fun with friends, yes she got too drunk, and I can't deny that. She made poor choices and I completely blame her for the horrible hangover she had the next day, but I do not blame her for you tearing apart her dignity.
