A Thank You To My Big Sister

I love you more than words can explain.

A Thank You To My Big Sister
Malisa Ray

I don't know what I would have done without you by my side. When we were younger, I would be fascinated by this beautiful older individual who seemed so independent, so strong, and so sure of herself. Even though we butted heads like crazy when we were little, I would always try to imitate your moves or follow you when you were with your friends. I wanted to be just like you and to show off my cool big sis to the world.

As years went by, we grew a lot closer. We started telling each other everything, and are there for each other through laughter and tears. We still fight like little kids, but at the end of the day, there is no one that could break our bond. Whether it is about school, boys, friends, or the weirdest stuff ever, you are always someone I can talk to. You are my best friend, and you've taught me so much.

I want to say thank you. Thank you so much for staying up late at night to make sure I got home safe. Thank you for always listening to what I have to say without passing any judgement. Thank you for not getting mad at me for stealing all your clothes, or constantly crashing your place. Thank you for giving me advice on everything and teaching me how to be a young adult without losing my inner child. Thank you, for all the times you made me laugh and for all the times you wiped away my tears and reminded me that I was important.

I want to say I'm sorry for any time I hurt you, or didn't express how lucky I am to have you. One of my biggest flaws is I take out anger on the ones I love the most, and this can push people away. But it never has pushed you away. Instead, you remind me the value of relationships and that it is okay to make mistakes at times; after all, I'm only human.

I can't think of a time you didn't come through for me. But truth is, I can't think of a time you didn't come through for anyone. You have such a pure heart, and I hope nobody ever hurts you because they will be hurting someone who will give up the world so others can be happy. God bless you always. I'm so proud of everything you've accomplished; all the hours you put in, sacrifices you make, and things you do are going to pay off one day. And I can't wait to be next to you when they do.

And lastly, I want to say I love you. You give me a reason to keep fighting everyday, and because of you, I have grown so much. I'm so lucky you're my sister. I want to end this with a promise that I will never leave your side. No matter where we are, we stick together, as sisters and best friends.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
