Text Messaging Etiquette. 5 Rules for Polite Texting

Technology has given us many new ways to stay in touch with friends

, family, and coworkers. One of the most popular methods of communication is text messaging. It is a fast and efficient way to get a message through. Free chatting sites online, an SMS, or Messenger, is the best way to stay in touch over long distances or catch up with friends and family.

Texting etiquette is a complex issue. To communicate effectively and correctly, several rules should be followed. These rules are general guidelines. They provide a guideline for texting but do not necessarily correspond to specific situations. All communication is situational. Understanding and applying these rules makes texting simpler and less frustrating for everyone. Here are five simple rules for good texting etiquette:

1. Keep it Short

Texting works best when it is efficient and concise. Save the long conversations for in-person communication and use texting for quick questions or conversations. Use a descriptive subject line to identify what you are texting about. This will make it much easier for your recipient to know what you are texting about.

Use numbers and symbols to make the message easier to read. Use standard abbreviations for frequently used words. If you have longer messages, try breaking them into multiple texts. People are more likely to respond quickly to a series of messages. This also makes it easier for your recipient to text back.

2. Don't Overthink It

Texting is meant to be fun and easy. Do not get so caught up in the details that you forget about the message itself. Take a step back and ask yourself, "What is this message trying to tell me?". If a message seems overly complicated, responding immediately may not make sense. Try to simplify your message.

This will make it easier for the recipient to understand and respond.
To enjoy free chatting online, keep it positive. Compliment your recipient and make light of any conflict or misunderstanding. This will make it easier for the recipient to respond without feeling pressured or stressed. If you are chatting with a stranger, keep it light and pretend you are chatting with an old friend or family member.

3. Use Proper Spelling and Grammar

Check your spelling and grammar before you hit send. Spelling mistakes and poor grammar can make your message difficult to understand. If you are not sure of the spelling of a word, look it up or ask another person. This is also true for any abbreviations you use in your text messages. Some abbreviations may mean something completely different in the context of texting.
If you are using your phone, use the auto-correct feature. It will fix some mistakes and give you a good idea of whether your writing makes sense. Sometimes this feature gets it wrong. Take a step back and reread the message. This can help you figure out what is missing or difficult to understand. Some words and phrases are more challenging to understand in text than in person.

4. Be Respective

Texting is more impersonal. The sender does not see the reactions or body language of the recipient. The recipient does not have an opportunity to see the sender's facial expression or the context of the message. This can cause misunderstandings. When chatting online, tone down a little bit in what you say. Do not use any vulgar or threatening language. Do not make any rude or mean comments.

Avoid making negative comments or critiquing the person in your message.
Everyone deserves respect, regardless of age, race, religion, or gender. Be careful with humor online. Keep it friendly and light. Never make fun of anyone. This can come across as mean and irritate the recipient. Watch for the emotions you put into your messages. If it is a sensitive topic, proceed with caution.

5. Consider Your Audience

Consider your recipient's age, race, religion, and gender before you text a message. This will help you give them the best message possible. Everybody's texting style is different. Teenagers use slang, abbreviations, emojis, and acronyms more often than older adults. Adults use more complete sentence structures and spell out names.

Consider your recipient and adjust your language. Do not overuse slang or abbreviations just to be cool. This will make it difficult for you to communicate effectively. If you are texting with a stranger, take some time to get to know them. This will help you develop a rapport together. Take the time to create some common ground before you start texting. This will make it easier for you both to feel comfortable and enjoy your conversation.

Texting is here to stay. Understanding your texting etiquette will help you enjoy it more. Free chatting online is a great way to make new friends online. Following these simple rules can enhance your text messaging experience and avoid many common pitfalls that make texting tricky.

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
