Aziz Ansari's latest project is a television show that recently made its debut on Netflix, "Master of None," seems to have struck a core with millennials.
Ansari plays a young actor named Dev trying to make it big in New York City. While Dev is growing up and learning all about dating, "Master of None" takes viewers on a very diverse journey through the world of dating and being an adult in the modern age.
One particular episode, "Parents," is one of the best examples of how diverse the show can be. Ansari's real parents star in this episode as they recall what it was like to be a young immigrant in New York. The whole episode focuses on the experience of his parents and compares it to Dev's upbringing as an American. Most critics think it is one of the best episodes of the series so far.
Dating is also one of the show's main themes. Dev sparks a love interest with a music publicist named Rachel (Noel Wells) who makes him rethink his idea of marriage, kids and career choices. The episode "Mornings" shows just how easy it is for a relationship to turn sour when you're young and ambitious. It starts off with a fresh relationship between Dev and Rachel and within a year they are fighting over petty things and obviously growing apart as their interests begin to change.
Ansari's attempt to depict the modern world from his point of view has resonated with aging millennials. Lots of millennials are at a similar point in their life as Dev is in the show. What makes it so believable is how Dev responds to certain situations. Sometimes he can come off as a clueless millennial but towards the end of the show the dynamic character of Dev can teach people how to deal with the always unpredictable road of life.
