Texas Kind Of Way

What Texans have to explain to non-Texans.

Texans take great pride in their state. To people not from Texas, we probably seem obnoxiously obsessed with our state. If you were from Texas, you would be obsessed too. We love our state and have a tremendous amount of state pride. There's a lot things we do and a lot of things that we love that might be a little weird to people not from here, so let me break a few of them down for you. You might then wish you were from Texas, too.

1. Whataburger

Texans are obsessed with Whataburger. Maybe a little too obsessed; but if you've ever eaten there you should understand why. If you haven't, I suggest you find the nearest Whataburger to you (there's a few not in Texas) and try their Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit. Let's not forget one of the most common questions we get on why we steal the Whataburger numbers. Well, honestly we don't know. It's just a thing we do and maybe we just want a little piece of our favorite fast food restaurant at home.

2. Bluebell

Bluebell is the best ice cream. If you've never had it you need to because you're missing out. Don't try to argue with me about it because other ice cream doesn't compare. Texans were not very happy when Bluebell had to be pulled of the shelves because of listeria. It was a long few months without it. It was like Christmas when it came back and it was a struggle to keep it stocked in stores because we missed it so much. I actually had the pleasure of going to school in the same town as a Bluebell factory and if you ever get the chance you should tour the factory.

3. Texas is huge

There is no such thing as a short road trip in Texas. It takes about 12 hours to get from one side of the state to the other. We also don't measure distance in miles; we measure it in hours. Don't ask how many miles away something is because that's not going to tell you anything. Knowing how long it will take you to get somewhere is what you need to know.

4. Buc-ee's

With long road trips, we need awesome gas stations. You haven't seen a clean restroom until you've been in a Buc-ee's restroom. If you need to stop on a road trip in Texas try to find a Buc-ee's. You can also get the best beef jerky, fudge, beaver nuggets and more there.

5. Sweet Tea

I know this isn't just a Texas thing -- it's more of a Southern thing -- but we love our sweet tea. No, unsweetened tea with splenda is not the same thing. You have to add the sugar while the tea is still hot or else it doesn't actually make sweet tea. If you want the best sweet tea come to the south, better yet: come to Texas.

6. We don't ride horses everywhere we go

In fact, not every person in Texas even owns a horse. I can't tell you how many times I've met someone from out of state and they've asked me if I ride my horse to school. No, I do not. I'm one of the Texans that doesn't own a horse. If someone in Texas did ride their horse to school, though, we probably wouldn't bat an eye.

7. Texas Country

We have our own genre of music named after us. Texas country music and country music are not the same thing. I love both genres of music but there is just something special about Texas Country. We have songs such as "Texas Kind of Way" by Cody Johnson and "You Ain't Met My Texas Yet" by Josh Abbot Band. Texans love Texas so much that our artists dedicate whole songs to it. We're obsessed with Texas and we love our Texas country music.

8. We take high school football seriously

"Friday Night Lights" is not just a fictional show to us. It's basically our lives. Pretty much everyone in town is at their high school football game on Friday nights. Not just the students and parents of the students, but the whole town. We love our Friday night football.

9. Homecoming Mums

With Friday night football comes Homecoming Mums once a year. Mums started out as guys giving their dates a chrysanthemum, but we all know everything is bigger in Texas, and slowly they turned into what we now know as Homecoming Mums. They're a big deal here and a special tradition to us.

10. Everything is bigger in Texas

We're not joking when we say everything is bigger in Texas. Everything is bigger and better in Texas. From college rings, to big hair to the Texas State Fair. Even food is bigger here. We truly believe in the saying "Go Big or Go Home."

11. Blue Bonnets

Blue Bonnets are our state flower, and during the spring time you can find them on the side of the highways. You can also find everyone taking pictures with them. Once you see a gorgeous field of Blue Bonnets you will understand why we take such great pride in them and why we love to take pictures in huge fields of them.

12. Don't Mess With Texas

We're serious when we say "Don't Mess With Texas." The saying started out as an anti-littering campaign, but has turned into much more than that. You can find the saying on all kinds of clothing and other things we own. You may even be able to find a few Texans that have it tattooed on them. We love our Texas and you don't want to mess with it.

13. Sunsets

Texas has the prettiest sunsets. You probably won't agree with me unless you've seen one but once you have, you'll agree. If you haven't seen a Texas sunset you need to put it on your bucket list because they are gorgeous.

14. State Pride

We have an immense amount of state pride. We love our state and we love to represent it. We put our state flag on everything from swim suits to shirts to bedding. We get our sate tattooed on us because let's be real, our state is shaped the coolest. Everyone can recognize Texas just by our shape. We love our state and we want everyone to know it.

Texas truly is forever.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement.
