Charlie Strong has a long way to go before the Texas Longhorns are back. The Longhorns started this season with a bang, yet that bang seems to have fizzled out.
With a big win over then ranked No. 10 Notre Dame, the Longhorns moved up to No. 11 in the rankings. The first time the Longhorns has been ranked under Strong and since 2013. After that game, many fans and commentators thought this was Texas’ year we had the Longhorns back and after a dominating win over The University of Texas at El Paso, everyone was ready to see them go far this season.
Yet after last week’s game against the California Golden Bears, many analysts are debating if Strong has stepped up to the plate. With the offense, being able to put up 43 points on the board, the Longhorns should have dominated, yet the defense allowed California to put up 50 points. This is especially shocking because prior to Strong being the head coach at Texas, he was a defensive coordinator for the Florida Gators. Many think that because of this background, Texas shouldn't be lacking defense and should be excelling in this area more than others, so do we blame Texas' defensive coordinator Vance Bedford for this?
"We have two weeks to look at it, I've been involved in the defense, I can be more involved and I will be more involved. It goes back to accountability; I told the coaches you are a direct reflection of your position," said Strong in an interview with Wescott Eberts, a writer for Burnt Orange Nation, a longhorn-specific sports media brand. With a statement like that you can expect to possibly see a change in coaching staff.
The Longhorns have two weeks to clean up the defense and settle into a better quarterback situation on offense. In the upcoming game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, many fans and analysts will be able to get a solid feel for what this team is offering this season. If Strong isn’t able to bring the Horns to a winning season, this could possibly be his last as head coach.
