Now that Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is fast approaching, I think it's fair to say not a whole lot of people were looking forward to Thanksgiving this year. Due to the election, entire families and groups of friends, were divided. Some people respected their family and friends for their political opinions, while some refuse to talk. You have to give this election some credit. It was entertaining from beginning to end. However for some people, the last thing they wanted to do was have awkward conversation while trying to avoiding politics and gorging themselves with food until they pass out. Over this holiday season, this is a small taste of what you experienced.

1. Being told, "this is a phase."

I think people get told this when they're in high school or college. It's stereotypical for people to think that young adults are going through a lot at this age. While it's true that a lot of change is happening during these years, however patronizing people, is not okay.

2. If you're under 18, you have probably been told it's a good thing you can't vote.

Again, we should be encouraging the next generation to get involved in politics not patronizing them because their opinions are different.

3. Receiving sarcastic questions about your political opinions or who you voted for.

This is the worst. You don't know if they're not being sarcastic and want to have a serious conversation or if they're being sarcastic.

4. Your parents being asked how they feel knowing they raised a (blank).

This is the worst. It's really awful because it implies that your parents failed as parents because the child they raised is the opposite political party than their parents.

5. You may have been on the receiving end of political GAG gifts.

Just laugh and ignore them. You can sell it on eBay later.

6. You have found that you have no conversation starter, so you mention something you saw on the news, and regret it.

Its okay. We've all been there.

7. But sometimes they bring it up, you either desperately try to leave the room or stay quiet and risk being mocked for not saying anything.

Just say you need more food because that will always be a good reason to leave.

8. You may have found out that a family member removed you from social media due to your beliefs.

It hurts a little bit but remember that its their loss.

9. And when politics is discussed, you find yourself isolated in your opinion.

Just focus on delicious food. It will never leave you.

10. A good thing is that it made you more open-minded and tolerant towards others beliefs. Go you!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
