Ten tips for dealing with stress
As the beginning of the semester begins, levels of anticipation and excitement rise. However for some, levels of stress and anxiety also rise. So here are a few tips to keep you calm and level for the start of the semester:
1. Meditation
Taking a few minutes out of your day to clear your head and breath can do wonders for stress. Here’s a link for some breathing exercises that will help.
2. Exercise
Whether it’s hitting the gym or taking some time to do yoga in your dorm room, exercising raises levels of endorphins and lowers stress.
3. Ground Yourself
Take a minute to really take in your surroundings. Feel the breeze on your skin, the grass beneath your feet. When you use all your senses, you should feel less stress.
4. Reach Out
For some, reaching out and being with friends can reduce stress. Friends are there to support you, so if you need them, tell them.
5. Decompress
Let it all go. Shake it all off. However you decompress, do it. Decompress for less stress.
6. Jam Out
Listening to music, specifically soft, soothing music, can help reduce stress.
7. Smile
Smiling can actually trick your brain into thinking that you are happy.
8. Create a catchphrase
When you start to feel yourself getting overwhelmed, repeating a mantra can help reduce that stress. For example, when I’m stressed I repeat the word “woosaa”.
9. Jot it Down
Writing down your thoughts can help give your perspective. Gaining perspective can help to reduce stress from overthinking.
10. Seek Help
If your stress is too much and you feel as though you can’t handle it on your own, seek professional help. There’s no shame in getting help, and sometimes people can’t do it on their own.
