From the beginning, Senator Elizabeth Warren wanted to question, and most certainly bring to light Betsy Devos’ experience, or lack thereof, in working with higher education programs. And Senator Warren did just that and schooled (pun intended) DeVos in her hearing, making it clear to Americans, Republicans and Democrats alike, that she has no clue what she was talking about.
1. Not even a full minute into Warren’s questioning, she comes in guns a blazing by immediately saying “My democratic colleagues have already pointed out your lack of experience in K-12 public schools.” That’s when I knew we were in for a good one.
2. After explaining that running the Education Department is similar to running a 30 trillion dollar bank (and throwing in some key facts about just how that affects millions of young people financially), Warren preceded DeVos if she has any experience with running a bank. DeVos responded with “Senator, I have not” (Get used to hearing that one liner friends)
3. Senator Warren follows up by asking “Have you ever managed or overseen a trillion dollar loan program?”, receiving a similar answer of “No, I have not.”
4. Warren decided that a billion dollars was quite a lot of money, so she decided to tone it down a notch by asking DeVos if she had ever don’t that with a billion dollar loan program. DeVos answers, yet again, with an “I have not”.
5. After making a CLEAR point that Mrs. DeVos has no experience in managing a program like this, Warren continues to throw the punches by asking her about her own personal experience in these types of programs. She asks DeVos if she had ever taken out a loan from the federal government to help pay for college and followed up by asking about if her children ever had to. Now, can you guess what her response was? (HINT: she has not)
6. Senator Warren continues the smack down by asking DeVos if she has ever had any experience with the Pell Grant. While Betsy DeVos herself hasn’t had any experience with this grant, she “certainly has friends and students who she has worked with..."
7. Before DeVos could even finish her sentence, Warren jumps on in to go in for round 2, but not before throwing in an extra comment on how she has NO personal experience with college financial aid or management of higher education. Continuing on, Warren asks DeVos if she supports protecting taxpayers from waste, fraud, and abuse. DeVos could barely say, "absolutely" before Warren exclaimed, “Oh good, so do I!” It was so serious, yet sarcastic, you almost couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
8. Following this comedic scene, Warren takes charge into pointing out how President-elect Trump’s experience with higher education ( basically less than DeVos’s ) is that of Trump University which resulted in thousands of people being scammed and cheated out of money.
9. “How do you plan to protect taxpayer dollars from waste, fraud, and abuse by colleges that take in millions of dollars in federal student aid?” asked Senator Warren. DeVos tried to skip around the question by saying she would be “very vigilant” towards making sure that wouldn't happen. Warren wouldn’t accept it though and said, “yeah, I’m asking how”.
10. Senator Warren seems like she’s is going to be a little easier on DeVos when she asked DeVos about her own personal ideas. DeVos continues to talk about how diligently she will work to make sure we do not have those types of issues. Little did she know, though, that it was A TRICK QUESTION. Warren comes back around by stating how there are already those types of rules in place, further proving that not only does DeVos NOT KNOW about these rules, but she was going to try and make rules up.
In the world of politics, this was an equivalent of a mic drop. Senator Elizabeth Warren absolutely killed this hearing and any validation that Betsy DeVos could have had. This is HUGE. Higher education and the federal money that encompasses it affects all of us. Thousands of students across America would not be able to afford college without these federal loans, and having a Secretary of Education Nominee that doesn't have the capacity (nor experience) to relate to larger part of Americans has no right to be in charge of it. We owe a huge thank you to Senator Elizabeth Warren for shedding light on a situation that should not be ignored.
