Ten Things That Turn 10 in 2017

2017 is bound to be full of crazy new things. I am sure there will be new technology and inventions as well as new hit songs much more. Thinking of this, I can't help but wonder what was new 10 years ago. So here it is, the top ten things from 2007.

1. Top Movies

Some really popular movies came out in 2007. A few big movies were Juno, Ratatouille, Superbad, Ocean's Thirteen, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. And who could forget John Travolta's version of Hairspray.

2. iPhone

On June 29, 2007 the first iPhone was released by Apple and Steve Jobs. The new iPhone began a revolution of smart phones and gave Apple the jump start they needed to become a huge company.

3. Big Songs

2007 gave way for a whole new kind of music. A lot of these songs, still, very present today. Where would we be without Umbrella and Shut Up and Drive by Rhianna, Crank That by Soulja Boy, Last Dollar by Tim McGraw, or Low by Flo Rida? I don't know but it is definitely not a world I want to live in.

4. Amazon Kindle

Amazon made it big in 2007 with its release of the first Kindle. The Kindle, the first e-reader, was released November 19, 2007 and was sold out in just over 5 hours. The item, in so much demand, was out of stock until April of the next year. The Kindle continues to grow and become more technological only helping the Amazon company.

5. Big Bang Theory

2007 opened up a brand new show for television that took the world by storm. The Big Bang Theory was first aired in 2007 and is still airing new episodes today. Who knew a TV show about science would be such a big hit?

6. FreeStyle Navigator Continuous Glucose Monitor

In May 2007, FreeStyle released its first continuous glucose monitor, the Navigator. This was a big breakthrough for the treatment of Type 1 and 2 diabetics all over. This also started a great improvement for new technologies for the treatment of diabetes which continues to grow.

7. Trump Steaks

In June of 2007, Donald Trump launched his own steak line branded "Trump Steaks". Trump Steaks were initially launched to be sold at Sharper Image and on QVC. Being sold for nearly $1,000 the steaks did not catch on and were discontinued in just 2 months. Although the steaks weren't a big hit in 2007, the did get their time in the spot light in the 2016 election when John Kasich mocked Trump with a parody ad.

8. Jordan Sparks

On May 23, 2007 Jordan sparks, a 17 year old, won the 6th season of American Idol. This season of American Idol had a record breaking number of votes as she and her runner up Blake Lewis sang for the $1,000,000 prize.

9. Wii Fit

Nearing the end of 2007 the Wii balance board and Wii Fit was introduced on December 1, 2007. Wii Fit changed the Wii system forever allowing for weight loss games that tracked your progress as well as your BMI. This game was great for anyone that used it as it got everyone moving. The Wii Fit brought games such as skiing, hula hooping, and yoga.

10. Rock Band

2007 was the year for big video games, one being the original Rock Band game for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Rock Band was released on November 20, 2007. The game allowed players to play along to classic songs with the drums, a guitar, or even singing with a microphone.

2007 was a year of many, many first. I can only hope 2017 is filled with better and better things. Happy 10th Birthday various items of 2007! You are still loved!!

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
