Ten Things I Miss About Texas

I'm missing Texas a whole lot, but here are ten specific things I'm missing.

I've lived in New York for about a month and a half and I'm really missing home. Granted I just visited home last weekend, I still miss it a lot. Being home made me realize that I missed so much about the only place I've ever called home.

1. Whataburger

Anyone who has ever been to Whataburger knows that it is actually food from the Gods. Whether it be breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Whata has you covered. Also, it's open 24 hours, so it's perfect for those late nights.

2. Country Music

Yes there are country stations here, but if you ask any Texan they'll say it's not real country music. Texas literally has their own genre of country, Texas country, and it's 10X better than anything that's on the country radio stations here.

3. Live Country Music

There is nothing like throwing on some boots and jeans and heading out to listen to your favorite Texas country band play on a Saturday night. I like outdoor concerts over indoor and in Texas that's what you get. It's warm and sticky but completely worth it.

4. Dance halls

I'm gonna preface this with the fact that I can't dance. Well, I can try, but watching me dance is like watching a train wreck. Even with that being said, I miss two-steppin' with a cute boy listening to great country music.

5. Tex-Mex

If y'all can't tell, Texas loves putting there spin on things and renaming it. Tex-Mex is Mexican food with a Texas twist that makes it wonderful. I miss real queso, chips, and nachos. Also, I really miss Chuy's and creamy jalapeno.

6. Manners

Even though I do live in a small town in New York and people do use manners, it is nothing like in Texas or in the South in general. Men always hold the door for you, everyone says please and thank you, and when you call someone ma'am or sir they don't tell you to stop.

7. Football

There is nothing quite like football in Texas. Every Friday night you can find the high school stadiums packed, every Saturday the college towns are way over capacity, and every Sunday the bars are packed with pro-football fans. Everyone has an opinion on every Texas team, whether it's high school, college, or professional and everyone talks about it. It's a football fan's paradise.

8. Boots and Jeans

When I say this I really mean men in boots and jeans. It's honestly the formal uniform of the south. I've never been to a nice event or place without seeing the majority of the men in starched jeans and their nice boots. And like Aaron Watson says, wrangler butts make the girls crazy.

9. Sweet Tea

There is nothing like tea so sweet it tastes like you are drinking liquid sugar. Here everyone just has unsweetened tea and you have to sweeten it yourself. I also miss being asked if I want sweet or unsweetened tea, it was always a choice.

10. The Texas Flag

Texans are very proud of their flag. It's on literally everything: clothes, shoes, houses, bags, literally everything. There is nothing like seeing the Texas flag fly with one of our legendary sunsets behind it.

I miss Texas more than anything, but I'm glad to be on this crazy adventure! I just wish some things from the South could make its way up North.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter
morethanwheels

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
