It's finally August and universities all over the country are getting ready for Freshman Move-In Day! It's an exciting and exhilarating day. Here are ten things for freshman to remember on their special day:
1. Your parents will miss you... and you will miss them too.
They will miss you before they even leave. This is an especially difficult day for them, whether you're the first child to go off to college or the last; letting go is never easy. You might think you are ready for them to leave, but the minute they do, you'll miss them. You'll start to realize that you don't have a fridge full of mom's cooking and that you no longer have the capability to barge into your brother's room and annoy him.
2. There will be plenty of awkward moments, embrace them.
You will get lost, mess up, or simply not know what to do when your random roommate gets in your way. This day is full of awkward moments and encounters, don't let them get to you. You'll laugh about it someday.
3. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
Introduce yourself to your neighbors, walk around campus and make new friends. The connections you make at the beginning of your freshman year will stick with you throughout your entire college career.
4. Today is the start of a new beginning.
Today you get to start your life as whoever you want to be. Who you were in high school doesn't matter. You have the ability to become the person you always wanted to be.
5. Accept that your room will never look like the ones on Pinterest.
I'm pretty sure every girl goes to college hoping her room will look like the ones on Pinterest. Even if you get pretty close, finals will destroy your room and it will never look that perfect. In fact, your room will never look better than the way it does on move-in day.
6. You are not "too cool" to skip out on floor meetings and RA programs; not today, not ever.
Your RA works so hard to be there for you, no matter what. Go to his/her programs!! You will get to know the people in your building better. Most of the programs are free fun ways to be involved with fellow residents. Why would you ever skip out on free food, a good time, and the opportunity to make new friends?
7. Take a break.
It's August and 99% of the country is on fire. Make sure you take a break and drink some water. Today will be a physically exhausting day.
8. It's OK to cry.
Move-in day is an emotional day. Chances are that you didn't get a lot of sleep the night before, you're tired, maybe a little "hangry", and this might be the first time that you're away from your family for more than a few days or weeks. I didn't cry when my family was around, but I definitely got a little emotional after they left.
9. Things might not go as planned, make sure to make the best out of any situation.
So, I can't be the only person who gets annoyed when things don't go the way I expected them to. On move-in day, I was on my way to my college town and my car broke down halfway there. It was definitely not what I expected and it totally threw me off. We made the best of it and it all worked out in the end.
10. Take pictures, kiss your family, and try to enjoy this day.
Today is a big day for everyone, make sure you cherish it.
Freshman, welcome to college--also known as the best four years of your life!
