Summer is here, and for many of us that means it's time to start our summer job. More specifically, summer means Day Camp, or, as my co-counselors and I like to call it, Summer Fun Camp! At Summer Fun Camp, campers like to say certain things over and over and over again, so here's a list of some of the most common things I hear from my campers over the summer.
1. What time is it?
Sometimes I like to be annoying and respond with "time for you to get a watch!" but the kids really get a kick out of it when I break out in song singing "It's summer time, summer vacation!" from High School Musical.
2. What are we doing next?
It doesn't matter if you told them the entire schedule for the day that morning, they are going to continue to ask you what's next until you have practically discussed your entire life plan in full detail.
3. I'm hungry!
The amount of times I have been asked if we can have lunch at 10:00 in the morning is getting slightly out of hand.
4. How old are you?
I love hearing the campers' responses when I tell them to guess how old I am. Answers can start as low as 16 and go up as high as 40.
5. Are you married?
Watch out counselors, your camper probably has a crush on you!
6. Do you have kids?
As some campers think I could be as old as 40, I suppose this is a valid question, but still, really?
7. They cheated!
There will always be a tattletale, and the person accused of cheating will always deny it, anything to win a game of dodgeball am I right?!
8. It's too hot outside!
This is always said in a whiny voice, and once the campers have decided it's too hot to play a game outside that 45-minute time slot just got a whole lot harder to fill!
9. I think I need ice.
They're gonna claim they are in so much pain, but as soon as you hand that ice over they're eating the ice instead of applying it and the pain is magically gone!
10. Will you be back next summer?
This is perhaps what keeps us counselors coming back every summer. While our campers may cause trouble and get on our nerves and act as if they don't like us, they want to know if we will be coming back to camp the next summer because they hope to see us there. As camp counselors, we get to provide a summer full of fun memories for these kids, and whether they show it or not, they will miss us throughout the year, and we will miss them too!
