10 Reasons To Still Have Hope In The World

Even though it's everything but hopeful.

10 Reasons To Still Have Hope In The World
Christopher Walker/Times Record News

Current events are giving us every reason not to have faith in humanity. War, hate and the 2016 presidential election have proven to be struggles that we as a nation will have to come together in order to stop. While it seems like something bad happens every day, and things aren't getting better, there are still plenty of reasons we have to be happy.

1. Summer isn't over.

For some of us, this may be very important. I won't start the countdown, but there are still plenty of weeks in the summer to relax, sleep in and catch some sun before you have to go back to school and your busy life. With summer comes many other fun and exciting things!

2. The Olympics

In just a few weeks, some of the world's greatest athletes will come together to kick butt and have fun competing in their favorite sports. Besides the fact that watching the Olympics and cheering on your favorites from Team USA is always entertaining, it will be nice to see so many different people from around the world coming together peacefully for some good competition.

3. "Hamilton"

As creator and star of "Hamilton," Lin Manuel Miranda just took his final bow in his lead role. For fans it may seem everything but hopeful. But don't worry! Miranda stepping down means that not only does he have time to relax and inevitably create another awesome piece of musical (?) genius, but it means we are all that much closer to seeing "Hamilton" ourselves. And we get to see Miranda in the PBS documentary and the new "Mary Poppins," and you won't have to break the bank to do it, so who's the real winner?

4. There are more kind people than not.

While it may not seem like it after this week's events, there are actually a lot of good, kind people in the world. The best pictures of these people are from the communities mourning and recovering from the loss of their own. Scenes like these from Dallas citizens supporting their local police officers show that we all have more people behind us than we may think.

5. "Pokemon Go"

For those of you who love "Pokemon," or just want to become more active, the new "Pokemon Go" app may be your newest addiction. Stories of random strangers meeting at pokestops and working together to catch Pokemon keep coming in, and honestly it is the coolest thing. Who knew that making new best friends and getting a daily walk in could be so fun?

6. Bob Ross in now on Netflix.

That's right folks, your favorite painter has scored a spot for his episodes on Netflix, meaning you can watch Bob paint until he's Phthalo Blue in the face, all while learning some life lessons. Next time you get stressed or concerned for the well-being of our dear planet, turn on "The Joy of Painting" on Netflix.

7. Celebrities are still cool (even if they steal your basketball superstar for their own team).

I know what you're thinking, there's no way we could like Steph Curry or think he's cool after the KD free agency deal, but THINK AGAIN. This video of Steph surprising kids at his basketball camp is not only super cool, but the kids' reactions are priceless. It is impossible to not like this guy.

8. Even bad guys can be decent people.

This past week in a Texas prison, footage was released after inmates broke out of a cell to save a fallen officer. When the on duty jailer had a sudden heart attack, it took only seconds for the prisoners to realize what was happening and break their way out to get help. It goes to show that just because people make mistakes and even break the law, it doesn't mean they're bad guys.

9. The world is still spinning.

Even though it may seem like the world can be coming to an end, it isn't, so we can all save the drama and make the most of it. I don't know about you, but I haven't seen signs of a zombie apocalypse or any other earth shattering events, so we'll be just fine.

10. God has a plan.

For those who believe in God's sovereignty and divine plan for our lives, it can be difficult to see his hand in the struggles we face. But in his word he says that from the beginning, he has loved us, and it is because of his love that we are put through the trials in our lives. When talking to the Israelites about the bondage and sufferings they endured due to their disobedience he says, "The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness; when Israel sought for rest, the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel!" (‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭31:2-4‬ ‭ESV‬‬).

So when you look around and see chaos and hardships galore, remember that God is still present and has plans to use your current afflictions for his glory.

There are plenty of reasons to be happy and have hope in the world -- it just might take a little light to find it in the dark.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
