Ten of the Worst Things About Michigan Winters

Winter is a brutal season, especially for those who live in the Great Lakes state. We all share a special bond when it comes to the parts of winter that we cannot stand; here is a list of 10 of them.

1. Having to get ready to leave 15 minutes early because you need to make sure you have time to scrape the 2-inches of ice off of your car.

2. The windchill. When it is already 10 degrees out but the windchill says it is -20 and your heart sinks a little bit.

3. Lake effect snow isn't a known winter issue for all in Michigan; however, for those that live near any of the lakes know that a winter storm means twice as much snow as everyone else in the state.

4. Having salt everywhere except where you need it. The salt seems to be all over your clothes and in the carpet in your house, but when you need it on the sidewalk so that you don't fall on your face it seems to be nowhere.

5. We have all noticed that for some reason NO ONE remembers how to drive as soon as the first snowflake falls from the sky. The rules haven't changed, but we all act like they have.

6. That really odd moment when you are craving ice cream or an iced drink but remember that it is 10 degrees outside and that doesn't make any sense.

7. One day the temperature is around 40 degrees and you have hope for the rest of winter, but the next day it is back down to 15 degrees and a blizzard.

8. Your chances of falling increase heavily when everything is covered in ice.

9. Trying to stay warm turns into paying an excessive amount of money for a tiny bit of heat in which you still have to wear two sweatshirts and three pairs of socks to stay warm.

10. The pot holes are ridiculously large and dangerous. It is almost impossible to avoid one, and eventually it becomes a game trying to see how many you can pass without hitting any of them.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
