As I write this, I am listening to show-tunes nonstop (no Hamilton pun intended). Broadway style music is incredibly identifiable, and truly gives a better experience when it comes to songs one should listen to. Where pop music is about people who know other people are trouble, or are a bunch of P.Y.T.s, or just want to party like its 1999, Broadway music tells a meaningful story; can stand alone, or have a lasting motif throughout the score; and covers a wide range of tempos, melodies, some of which incorporating pop, rap, R & B, and other genres all combined. The story of show-tunes, however, is my favorite part. I am admittedly obsessed with how easily Broadway-style music has the power to make me feel some type of way. So without further ado, here are ten quotes from Broadway songs to help you dance through life.
10. "It's the bitch of living, just getting out of bed."
This quote is from the song Bitch of Living from Tony Award winning musical, Spring Awakening. In my freshman year, with all of the overwhelming garbage I had to deal with, my mom moving a thousand miles away the day before my birthday, almost being pulled out of theatre, etc., this lyric would have hit me on a spiritual level. Thank goodness I am in a much better place. But every now and again, I do feel like I can relate to this quote.
9. "Forget regret, or life is yours to miss."
From No Day But Today, a song and recurring motif in RENT, this is seriously an intensely emotional lyric. The ensemble of characters is sure to leave you in tears after hearing this lyric.
8. "A vision's just a vision if it's only in your head."
Every time I listen to Sunday In the Park with George, I am taken back to the Florida State Thespians competition in spring break of 2016. Not only did the show blow me away, but it is one of the most memorable experiences of my life. This quote, especially, holds immense weight with me, as I am a scenic designer at heart. How on earth could I bring my sets to life if I don't draft them down? My visions will never remain just visions.
7. "The winner takes it all."
Mamma Mia provides an immersive experience that you cannot avoid tapping your feet to. This jukebox musical, packed with Abba songs, has an incredible story. This lyric of from a song of the same name, and strikes a chord on anyone who listens.
6. "Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise."
This lyric is from Les Miserables. I can tell you are trying to figure out how to pronounce that title. Don't. I think the entire theatre community would be satisfied with you just always calling that show "Les Miz." Anyway, this quote is universally applicable. I recommend committing it to memory.
5. "Always look on the bright side of life."
Spamalot is hilarious. Cheek-hurting, side-aching hilarious. This quote surely tells anyone who is listening that the grass you are on is already greener.
4. "You're never fully dressed without a smile."
Classic little orphan Annie is the epitome of keeping your chin up in times of trouble. Try your hardest to heed these words and smile. Your outward emotions, no matter what you feel at your starting point, definitely will tell your ever-negative brain to lighten up a little bit. The smile will eventually become real if you give it enough time.
3. "Impossible things are happening every day."
Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella originally starred Laura Benanti, a Broadway icon and inspiration to anyone and everyone. Remember that you can do anything. If Cinderella can overcome her stepmother and stepsisters by becoming a princess, you can write that essay, do that quadratic equation, build that birdcage. Whatever your issue is or how impossible something seems, it can happen. Things like that happen on the daily.
2. "Dying is easy, young man. Living is harder."
Did you really think I wouldn't include a Hamilton quote? Oh, hon. This musical is packed with a plethora of inspirational quotes. I mean, how could a musical about a young, scrappy, and hungry bunch of rebellious founding fathers not have dozens of quotable lyrics? This particular one has a few variations and is a recurring motif in the 46 song show. It really speaks to me in so many aspects of my own mental health, as well as caring for others.
And coming in at Number One,
1. "Who can say if I've been changed for the better, but, because I knew you, I have been changed for good."
This sure is a Wicked quote! I'll stop. I'm not funny. Wicked is such a phenomenon in the Broadway industry. This twist on the classic Wizard of Oz is unique from any other interpretation. Without giving away too much, so that you can do your own research on the show and be blown away by the story and lights and sound and set by yourself, I can honestly say that this quote can be incorporated into any aspect of life. No matter what happens, you will be changed. Even something as little as tripping over a shoelace will change you for good. Nobody knows how an experience will affect you, whether or not you will be changed for the better, but every experience will do something to you. You are here on this earth right this very moment because you have been changed for good.
