Although the news has been filled with not so pleasant events, one of the few good things right now is the explosion of "Pokemon GO!" Not even a month of being released to the public, it has taken the nation by storm, and many people, both gamers and civilians alike, have been reveling in the nostalgia and awesomeness. And in case you are new to the scene, here's a take at some of the best Pokemon from the region of Kanto.

10. Moltres

One of the legendary bird Pokemon, this fire-and-flying type Pokemon resembles a phoenix, and it is said that one flap of its wings can illuminate the night sky. Another cool power is to freely control fire and to dip itself in lava in order to heal itself. This bird also had a leading role in "Pokemon the Movie: 2000." The legendary bird trio set the trend of legendary trios for generations to come.

9. Gengar

The original ghost-type Pokemon, it's fast, sleek, creepy, mischievous and amazing. Said to steal the life force of anyone close by, the presence of Gengar is noted with a cold and eerie aura in the surrounding area. Both amazing in the anime and the games, Gengar has been one of the very few Pokemon to be competitively viable in all six generations and all VGC formats. You know what they say, too spooky for you.

8. Arcanine

Proud, regal, majestic and beautfiul, Arcanine was the poster child of Pokemon that everyone needed to have back in the day. Its huge mane and bark are said to make people grovel and bow, which only add to its awesomeness. Before the introduction of Rayquaza in generation three, Arcanine was the only Pokemon back in generation two to know the rarely known move, Extremespeed.

7. Snorlax

Snorlax is the only Pokemon that can be lazy, fat and cute at the same time. Said to eat hundred pounds of food a day, it does nothing more than sleep. In the anime, Ash owned one and it proved to be quite useful in the Orange Islands arc, the Silver Conference arc and the Battle Frontier arc.

6. Eevee

Typically seen as one of the cutest Pokemon ever designed, this creature is a grab-bag of a cat, rabbit, mouse and fox all combined into one, cute, fluffy animal. It also has the most evolutions possible in Pokemon, as it can become any one of eight possible evolutions, all differing based on typing and stats. In a way, the possibilities are endless.

5. Scyther

A bug-type and flying-type Pokemon, this mantis boasts a huge attack and speed stat, as well as being as fast a ninja. It was the original "slice-and-dice" type of battler, as its huge scythes deal devastating blows to the opponents.

4. Mewtwo

The original uber legendary, said to be the strongest Pokemon ever created, Mewtwo is horribly strong and amazing at the same time. Created from recombining the DNA from Mew, the scientists who created Mewtwo failed to give it a caring heart. Mewtwo only knows power and destruction, but you cannot deny its psychic prowess. Plus, it had the lead role of "Pokemon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back."

3. Dragonite

The original dragon-type Pokemon, it has a cute appearance, but can release amazingly, strong power. Don't let the tiny wings fool you, as Dragonite is capable of flying around the world in just 16 hours. Hyper-beam and Outrage are at its disposal, and once in a blind fury, it is virtually indestructible.

2. Pikachu

The original mascot of the Pokemon franchise and Ash's faithful companion, Pikachu is cute as a button and cool like Elvis. Those ears, those red cheeks, that tail, the cuteness overload is too much. It has been in almost every episode of the anime, and even made a starring role of every Pokemon movie. Although not super strong, Pikachu has a place in all of our hearts.

1. Charizard

The original "dragon" starter, Charizard is cool as can be and was noted in the anime for being one of Ash's strongest Pokemon he ever commanded. Versatile, fiery and strong, its fire can melt boulders and even start forest fires. Nowadays, Charizard basks in the limelight for being blessed with not one, but two mega-evolutions. Although not considered a dragon-type by nature, Charizard will always be a dragon at heart.
