I'm sure most of you know what the Miss Teen USA Pageant is and have heard recent complaints about this year’s pageant. Not only was the young woman crowned Miss Teen USA, Karlie Hay, exposed when someone found racist tweets using the "n-word" from years before, but also actress and model Chrissy Teigan had no fear when she pointed out the fact that all five top contestants look strikingly similar.
Formed in 1983, the Miss Teen USA Pageant has always been quite popular. But because of recent events, many people are disappointed with the conduct of the organization. My main concern with Miss Teen USA is how biased it is.
Out of the 50 contestants, 28 of the young women have dark colored hair or dark eyes and out of those 28, six young woman were not Caucasian. With this diverse group of 50 beautiful, young women, many people were surprised and angry to know that every single contestant in the Top Five were white females with blonde hair and light colored eyes. Although I'm sure the girls were ecstatic and proud to be in the Top Five, what message does this send to underage girls watching the pageant?
For a while, the only look Barbie had was Caucasian skin, blonde hair and blue eyes. This was the picture perfect image of beauty and caused many insecurities in girls who did not fit this beauty standard. Although now there are Barbies of all skin colors with features of all colors, real life women are still being conformed to this same beauty standard.
With the diverse group of young women in the Miss Teen USA Pageant, you would expect to see a more diverse top five selection. But unfortunately, the Miss Teen USA organization also sees blonde hair and blue eyes as the perfect beauty standard. Although all the young women participating are beautiful inside and out, the public wishes to see a less biased and more diverse selection of winners.
