A former Disney Channel pop rocker and heartthrob is set to star in a different type of role. Parents, you might not want to let your kids convince you to let them see this one.
R5 frontman and Disney's Teen Beach Movie and Austin & Ally star, Ross Lynch, will be starring in a film adaption of the cult comics and graphic novel “My Friend Dahmer.” In case you haven’t guessed, Lynch will portray the infamous serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer.
While this might not be a flick to take your kiddies to, don’t go into the theaters expecting a slasher film depicting the gruesome murders. Lynch will be portraying Dahmer in his early years, up until his high school graduation (which was just weeks before his first murder). Even still, the thought of one of the fresh faces of Disney portraying a person who is infamous for such brutality is offsetting.
Another name from children's programming will be appearing in the film as well; Alex Wolff will co-star with Lynch as Derf, a childhood friend of Dahmer and the eventual author of the graphic novels the film is based on. Wolff is probably most recognizable from Nickelodeon’s Naked Brothers Band, where he starred with his brother Nat. Nat has gone on to star in The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns.
“My Friend Dahmer” will show Dahmer’s slide from your average, though quirky, teenage boy to a dangerous alcoholic. The graphic novels focus on telling the uncomfortable tale of how the troubled teen lived among friends and classmates and gave little indication of the monster he would become.
Derf compared the discomfort of Lynch’s casting in the sinister role to the offsetting vibe of the whole story. "The story is discomforting. […] I think people will be uncomfortable, but tough. That's just part of the story."
While there is no official release date for the film yet, you can check out pictures from set on the film’s Instagram.
