5 TED Talks That Could Change Your Life
TED Talk

If you ever need inspiration, a good cry or a new perspective on the world, try watching a TED talk. TED talks were originally about technology, entertainment and design, but are now expanded to include a broad range of topics that touch on pretty much anything you could think of. Speakers who give the talks engage the audience with their ideas in about 20 minutes, hoping to get across their message and change the way people view that topic. While there are countless TED talks available to watch online, there are few that really stand out above the rest and push you to think in a completely unique way. A few of these TED talks are below.

1. The Power of Vulnerability by Brene Brown

Brene Brown is one of the funniest, most intelligent and relatable TED talk speakers I've seen. In this particular video, Brown challenges us to go outside our comfort zones and open ourselves up, putting it all on the line in order to achieve a deeper sense of happiness and stronger, more connected relationships. Her saying of "embrace the discomfort" is one that should be carried in everyday life through all the difficulties we face. If you like her talk here, also check out her videos about shame and her books. She is truly revolutionary.

2. How great leaders inspire action by Simon Sinek

If you feel unsure about your ability to make a difference, check this video out. Sinek uses the example of Apple to demonstrate the significance of "why we do what we do." He emphasizes how what you do and how you do it are meaningless if you can't explain why you're doing it. I've used this video to teach leadership seminars and if nothing else, people always remember the golden circles metaphor. Sinek will change the way you lead and help you be more effective.

3. Your body language shapes who you are by Amy Cuddy

"Fake it until you become it" is something I tell all my friends who struggle with confidence. Cuddy discusses how simply changing the way we stand can shift the way our minds think. She explains that scientific studies show that adjusting the way you carry yourself will not only change the way others perceive you, but also how you perceive yourself. By standing in a way that conveys confidence, you can change your whole self-image.

4. Violence against women-it's a men's issue by Jackson Katz

Jackson Katz shifts the paradigm by critiquing the way society rears young men. He holds men accountable for "gender violence issues" and asks society to change the way it portrays the definition of manhood. No more excuses and no more "it doesn't involve me." Katz is helping to change the conversation and make an end to violence.

5. Why we all need to practice emotional first aid by Guy Winch

Ever kick yourself while you're down? Winch wonders why we are cruel to ourselves and underestimate our self worth. He asks the question of why we take more care of our physical beings than our minds. By emphasizing the importance of treating ourselves they way we treat others, Winch allows us to focus on improving our mental health. A really interesting way to engage people in discussions that are hard to have.

Although these are only some of the incredibly enlightening TED talks that are available, these videos can truly change the way you live your life. They start discussion and attempt to make a difference. They have empowered me to reflect on myself and I hope they inspire you to do the same.

10 Truths About Being In A Sorority

(For Girls Who Are Interested In Greek Life)

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
