Remember when Ted Cruz caused the Republican National Convention to go into an uproar when he used his primetime center stage address to noticeably not endorse Donald Trump?
Well, just two months after telling his fellow Republicans to "Stand, and speak, and vote [their] conscience," it looks like Ted Cruz finally gave in and endorsed the man who not only insulted him repeatedly, but also insulted his wife's looks and attempted to tie his father to JFK's assassination.
Just last Friday, on Sept. 23, Cruz posted a status on Facebook with the endorsement. "After many months of careful consideration, of prayer and searching my own conscience, I have decided that on Election Day, I will vote for the Republican nominee, Donald Trump," he said.
Cruz's Facebook post contained two reasons for his endorsement: "First, last year, I promised to support the Republican nominee. And I intend to keep my word." For a promise made last year, it's a little late in the game to fulfill it now, but better late than never, I suppose.
This brings the thought to mind - why now? When Cruz refused to endorse Trump during the RNC, that earned him huge backlash from not only Republican voters who had decided to support Trump, but also from other Republican leaders for showing such blatant disunity within the party. Now, with this sudden endorsement, Cruz lost additional support from conservatives from the #NeverTrump movement.
Much more predictably, Cruz's second reason for endorsing Trump was simple: "even though I have had areas of significant disagreement with our nominee, by any measure Hillary Clinton is wholly unacceptable," he wrote.
In response, Trump issued a statement, saying, "I am greatly honored by the endorsement of Senator Cruz. We have fought the battle and he was a tough and brilliant opponent. I look forward to working with him for many years to come in order to make America great again."
