In today's society, people are frequently found glued to their cell phone screens. Oftentimes you hear about how the advancement of technology is causing an increase in the concern that we are declining in social skills; however, it seems that Niantic's release of Pokémon Go is achieving just the opposite.

For those of you who do not yet know, Pokémon Go is an augmented reality application, for both Android and Apple users. The game forces players to physically get up and walk around in order to collect Pokémon, visit Pokéstops, and battle at gyms. In turn, the game has gotten people talking, not only online, but also in person. This is not to be confused with Geocaching, which allows a person to physically find an object; Pokémon characters and objects exist only virtually, and not physically in the real world.

Unlike other games, Pokémon Go has an appeal to a wide array of ages. Having downloaded the game myself, I have to say that the idea was ingenious. Whether it was intentional or not, in the week that I have had the game, I have been more active than I have been all summer (granted it is only July, but that's two months of practical inactivity), and I have talked to many people that I otherwise would not have. I was at the beach and overheard people discussing Pokémon, and somehow mustered up the courage to talk to them- we conversed for a while, exchanged tips, and even caught some Pokémon together. The next day, I found myself in the same situation, only this time at the zoo, it seems like the game has either given us the courage to socially interact, or has made others seem more approachable- either way, it seems to me like a miracle. It does not matter whether you are on Team Instinct, Team Mystic, or Team Valor (Go Instinct!), everyone can relate and everyone can find a reason to talk about the game. Now get out there, spark a conversation with a new friend, and go catch 'em all!

Here are some other stories that show just how powerful of an impact this game has had on socialization:

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
