Tech: Our Home Away From Home

As summer comes to an end, there is one thing on every Hokie's mind: move-in day. It's the day we have all been counting down since the beginning of summer.

Blacksburg, Virginia is a community of over 30,000 students with school spirit that is unmatched by any other. Even after just one year, this place has become my home away from home, and here are a few reasons why.

1. Enter Sandman. Nothing will get a student's blood pumping more than 'Enter Sandman' coming over the jumbotron's speakers at a home game. Jumping in unison with over 66,000 people is exhilarating. Football season is just around the corner and I know I can't wait to wake up early on game day and tailgate with all of my best friends. The first few chords of 'Enter Sandman' is enough to give any Hokie cold chills.

2. Friends. Making new friends in college tends to take the place of friends we left behind in high school. At Virginia Tech, my friends have become family. Reuniting with sisters and getting back into the swing of Greek life may be a little overwhelming, but it's also exciting knowing you will have so many sisters excited to see you. Also, knowing that you are going to live with your best friends for the next year, in your first apartment, is thrilling.

3. Food. With the number one dining services in America, it's hard not to miss campus food. Whether it's West End brunch or Turners Hibachi Grill, food at Virginia Tech is amazing. Or, maybe its Cabo Fish Taco, The Celler or the late night runs to cookout. It is easy to miss the countless food options in Blacksburg.

4. Freedom. Not only do we have freedom from our questioning parents, but we now have the responsibility to make decisions for ourselves. For example, at college it's acceptable to take a nap at any hour of the day. There is also no one to pester us about our plans or where we are going. Sometimes, it's nice to just walk around and listen to music alone, or to find a nice spot on the pylons and simply take in the view.

5. Community. Trying to describe the Hokie community in one word is tough. Everyone has so much school and spirit and people are full of respect for each other. If you're like me, then you probably miss being surrounded, every day, by thousands of people of the same age. There are endless opportunities to make friends and experience new things.

Here's to a new semester back at a school that I call home.

Christmas Tree

Now that Halloween is over, it's time to focus on the Holiday Season. Don't get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is great and can't wait for it, but nothing gives me greater joy than watching Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas, lighting peppermint scented candles, decking the halls, and baking gingerbread cookies. So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
