As an education student—and one that is fast approaching the beginning of senior year—there are two questions that I hear all of the time: “What do you want to teach?” and “Where do you want to work?”. Now, the first question is easy enough to answer because I have always known that I wanted to teach English, but the second question, without a doubt, always stumps me. I usually tell people that I would like a job back in my hometown, but I’m up for any place that will hire me. But a large part of that isn’t truthful. Thinking about packing up and moving away from my family and friends is a scary thought, but, for some reason, every time I see an article about Hawaii come up on my
Maybe it’s the constant tropical weather (let’s be honest, I’m sick and tired of snow!), the outdoor lifestyle, or the constant access to amazingly fresh fruits and vegetables, but I can’t seem to shake the idea of moving to Hawaii. Voted as one of the happiest places in the United States, Hawaii has sent out word that it needs to fill more than 1,000 positions and many people are responding.
Living in a place known for its culture, adventure, and overall beauty, doesn't seem like a large compromise--in fact, it is a compromise that I am beginning to give more and more thought to. Working in the field I love, in a beautiful place that is vastly different from my small hometown in rural Maine, sounds just about perfect. Being able to spend my free time on the beach, or hiking, or just exploring the cities and learning about the native culture sounds like an adventure of a lifetime.
I might never do this, or I might pack a bag and head on the adventure of a lifetime. But that is all a mystery. If I do decide to embark on this journey, it may be for a year, it could be for a lifetime. Who knows?
