As a teacher, I try to treat all of my students in a similar manner. We're not really supposed to have favorites, but the inevitable connection with specific students makes that difficult at times. I know I'm definitely guilty of having those students.
My favorite students tend to be those who rely pretty heavily on their emotions. It's easy for me to relate to them because I am similar. Emotions make connections easy, and students who use them more than others are often open to building relationships with others.
The school year is nearly at an end, and I have very mixed feelings. Normally, I'd be very ready to spend more time outside with my daughter, but this year is much different. This is my last year teaching at my first school. I have been here for four years, and because it is a small school, I have been making strong bonds with some of these students since my first day.
My theater kids are those that will be hardest to leave. For four years, we have built strong bonds while sharing our mutual love of theater. I just want them to know a few things before our time together is at an end:
1. You are loved. Never for that that you are cared for by so many people - including me. No matter how many miles separate us, no matter how far away I seem and how long we go without seeing each other, I am always thinking of you.
2. You are strong. Sometimes, it's easy to be buried in the weight of everything the world throws at you. Remember that you can do this. Take a break. Take a breath, and tackle each barrier one at a time.
3. You are talented. There is a reason you were cast in shows - and it's not because you're my favorite students. :) It's because you work hard, time and time again. You're always striving for better.
4. You can do this. No matter how much anxiety you're feeling, no matter how stressed you may feel, you've got this! If you love theater, audition as much as possible. Never forget that you're talented. You won't get every role. You'll feel the sting of disappointment. But if you love this - it will all be worth it.
5. You are beautiful. The emotions you share, both on and off stage, are always honest. Never lose that honesty.
In all reality, my best and favorite memories of my time here are thanks to my theater kids - moments on stage, in the classroom, on the bus, and at dinner. I owe them everything - and I hope they know that.
