I Am A Teacher, NOT Your Child's Babysitter

A message to parents who think teachers are their child's babysitters.

I Am A Teacher, NOT Your Child's Babysitter

I am a teacher.

YOU are the parent.

I have your child for 6-7 hours a day.

YOU have your child for the other 17-18 hours.

I have your child from Monday to Friday.

YOU have your child on the weekends.

I have your child from August to June.

YOU have your child for Summer break, Winter break, and Spring break.

I teach your child reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.

YOU should be teaching them morals and values, and respect for others and themselves.

I have classroom rules.

YOU should be reinforcing these rules at home.

I punish your child when they do the wrong thing.

YOU should remind them what is right and wrong, and discourage them from bad behavior.

I grade your child on their performance and help them when I am able to.

YOU need to help them when they need help or tutoring after school.

I observe your child. I see what their problems are over time. I do research. I may suggest your child be tested for ESE after consulting the ESE teacher.

YOU need to realize that your child may need help. No one is perfect. Not even your baby.

I take your child to lunch.

YOU have to feed them dinner.

I provide instruction and keep your child awake.

YOU need to put them to bed at night so they are ready for tomorrow.

I provide a safe learning environment.

YOU need to provide a safe home environment.

When you blame a teacher for your child's attitude, you need to look back at yourself.

When you blame a teacher for your child's grades, you need to look back at yourself.

When you blame a teacher for your child's anything, you need to look back at yourself.

I am a teacher.

I do everything in my power to help your child grow and prosper.

I teach your child a lot of the things they need to know and learn in order to grow up.

But I only have them for 6-7 hours a day.

I only have them for 5 days a week.

I do not live with your child.

I do not feed your child.

I do not put them to sleep at night.

I can only be so much for your child.

I have been called many things.

Babysitter.

Caregiver.

Parent #3.

But I am a teacher.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
