Dear skeptics, I am a teacher and more successful than you

To me, "teacher" does equal success.

Dear skeptics, I am a teacher and more successful than you

Dear Skeptic,

You told me you were more successful than me. When I asked why, you simply said, "Teacher," while pointing at me.

That hurt, I will give you that, but it didn't let it phase me. At this point, I'm used to the treatment - the disrespect, aghast, and doubt - that comes with the title of "Teacher." It is a commodity in today's day and age. It saddens me of course, but it infuriates me even more.

You told me you were more successful than me, and I see why you would think that. You're working towards a nice office job with lots of paid vacation, opportunities for growth, and - above all - a high salary. You told me that I was making a mistake, that I should try a career path that was more "fulfilling," more successful. What you don't know is that wealth and luxury are not the deciding factors in my career, and I pity you if they are yours.

You told me you were more successful than me, and not for one moment did I believe you.

I am far more successful than you will ever be, and that is a fact.

Daily, I am successful.

Daily, I succeed.

Daily, I help others grow and discover themselves. I help them learn and explore the world around them. I help them find their interests and dislikes. I nurture them and watch them blossom. I guide them. I watch them smile and cheer them on. I watch them cry and offer words of condolences and advice. Deep in my heart, I want what is best for them. I push them towards their own definitions of success. I help them and I love them - them being the youth of this country you love so much.

You see, you and I have different definitions of success. You measure success in worldly things, in your money, shiny new car, and name-brand suits. I do not.

I measure my success by the success of my students. Are they happy and growing? Are they discovering new things about themselves? Are they exploring the world around them and making new discoveries that change the world as they know it? Are they learning?

You told me you were more successful than me. I just smiled in response.

I don't just wear the hat of "teacher." I am a counselor, a mentor, a leader, a stand-in parent, and a friend. I am more successful than you will ever be, especially with your mindset.

You told me you were more successful than me, and I let you believe that because without people like me - without all of us "unsuccessful" and "unfulfilled" teachers - you wouldn't even know how to read.

You told me you were more successful than me, and I let you believe that because that is what I do; I encourage others towards their definitions of success, not belittle those who think differently than me.

Love,

A Very Successful Teacher

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
