It seems to become a bigger issue as time and society progresses, that tattoos become more common and less taboo. The big question that stems from this is whether or not these pieces of ink are considered to be unprofessional.
I come from a somewhat creative family. We're all artistic in our own right-be it writing, music, drawing, woodworking, etc. and appreciate work in it's different forms. To me, and to many, tattooing is considered an art form-intricate designs and masterpieces etched permanently into the skin of a person. My brothers, mom and I all have at least one tattoo and each one is tied to a story--a backstory, a tale of how the tattoo came to be or even a simple meaning. Personally, I believe that those are the best ones, but the more exposure I get to the art form and experience I receive, I come to find that I just appreciate the work as a whole. See, my mom believes that too many tattoos can be a bad thing, that they lose their meaning when muddled together in the whole of a "sleeve" (when your entire arm is filled with the artwork). I, however, am the opposite. Though all of my tattoos that I've received so far (three) have meaning, it is my belief that, yes, they should be thought out and appreciated, but don't necessarily have to have a specific meaning tied to them. I know of many people that have gone under the needle for a piece simple because they liked the design-and that's okay.
What's not okay, in my opinion, is the discrimination against those with tattoos in the professional workplace. Since I can remember, I've supported tattoos on doctors, dentists, accountants, lawyers and any job that's imaginable. They're a form of self expression, like getting piercings, dyeing your hair or creating artwork. Because that's all tattoos are-artwork, but on your skin. So who's to say that you can't express yourself? It's like denying someone to be who they really are.
Since our generation is more excepting, it seems as though the older generations are the ones with the issues. I'm not bashing them or getting mad, but our elders do seem very opinionated in the matter, some going as far to refuse treatment or help from those with ink, as if the pieces on their bodies affect their ability to perform their job. It's silly, but the generational opinion is very divided, with less acceptance from those who are older. And if they raise their children to think and behave as close-minded as they do, who's to say that the next generation will be any less accepting?
All in all, it's just a matter of opinion. I'm all for tattoos in the professional work place because, to me, it's a form of self expression, as well as a display for an artists hard work and dedication to his craft. Why not help an artist practice and perfect his profession? Everyone has to start somewhere. I just love the experience and the idea of tattoos; I just wish other people felt the same way.
Until next time,
stay safe and happy
