6 Tattoos I'd Get If I Was Braver

And not afraid of needles...

I’m kind of a certified pain weenie, in the worst way. I can’t stand needles, cuts, stubbed toes, or any mention of blood in any way, shape or form. I’m that person who had to leave health class because I got too grossed out by the video of blood pumping through veins (not one of my proudest moments). But amazingly enough, I have a tattoo. It was achieved mostly through a combination of pep talks, hand-holding and-and no planning ahead whatsoever. And even more amazing, I want more. I think tattoos are beautiful and unique, and if I wasn’t a total baby when it comes to a little stinging, I would want these 6 jaw-dropping designs on myself.

1. Affectionately termed “the underboob mandala,” this intricate design comes in all shapes, sizes, and varieties and is absolutely stunning. It’s the perfect tattoo for people who want to display their tattoos when they feel like it, and keep them private when they don’t.

2. Although it’s most commonly writing, there are many options for tattoos that run the length of your spine. This is a great place for longer quotes, intricate symbols, or even a larger image. If you don’t fear needles by your spinal chord, this tattoo is a pretty BA option for you.

3. I love the idea of a behind-the-ear tattoo. It’s cute, it’s minimal and you can just as easily hide it as you can show it off. This is a great place for initials, geometric shapes, or meaningful symbols. Not to mention that it adds a little extra flair to your “good side” when it’s time to #selfie.

4. Although lip tattoos are a little controversial, I think we can all appreciate the serious bravery it takes to willingly allow needles near your mouth. Whether you love the idea for a nickname, a single word, or a tiny image, this is definitely one tattoo that people just won’t see coming - and what’s more fun than doing something just because it makes you happy?

5. I am unashamedly jealous of anyone who is confident enough to get any extensive tattoo on their back - especially when it comes to watercolor. These pieces bring the meaning of “work of art” to tattoos and are definitely a story for the grandkids one day!

6. Last but not least...the extensive side/hip/thigh tattoo. Although these tattoos vary greatly depending on the person, the more of your side that’s covered, the more jealous I am. These extensive and intricate tattoos look absolutely stunning, and more often than not, come with an amazing story...if you don’t mind sitting for 8 or 9 hours that is.

Although these tattoos may not be in my near future at all, I still have complete and utter respect for the women (and men) who are willing to endure the pain for the beautiful results. For now, I think I’ll stick to my small ankle and wrist tattoos, and keep pinning away the bigger tattoos that fascinate me. Maybe one day, with a little bit of spontaneity and a whole lot of pep talks, I’ll be sporting one of my own...a girl can dream, right?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
