Tattoos: An Underrespected Form Of Art

We put paintings in museums but ask people to cover their tattoos.

Tattoos: An Underrespected Form Of Art

The first thing people always say to me when I tell them I'm getting a new tattoo is "Make sure it's in a place you can cover up." They say this because most jobs require you to cover up your tattoos whether they're inappropriate or not. I could understand if they were tattoos that were offensive but in general most tattoos are not. Yet we have to defer from getting tattoos in places where they can be seen. This is art we saw important enough to place on our bodies for the rest of time but we are told to cover it up and look professional.

My question is who decides what's professional? Who decided that tattoos are 'trashy' and that those who have them must be terrible and reckless human beings? Society is telling us what is okay and what isn't to put on our bodies and the last time I checked it really wasn't any of their business. I've gotten so many comments about how I'm 'ruining a good thing by getting tattoos' and that I 'look trashy and unattractive'.

Well please listen really closely for just a second: I do NOT wake up in the morning and dress myself for you. I don't do my makeup hoping that you'll enjoy it and I don't care in the slightest bit if you dislike my tattoos because they're not for you.

Tattoos are a form of art, mine make me feel beautiful and when I look at them I feel good about myself, which is unusual for me. Telling people they have to cover them up makes it seem like tattoos are a bad thing which disrespects that form of art. Telling people who let their children get tattoos at the legal age that they are terrible parents is just judgmental and rude.

People who walk around with tattoos are displaying their art, it's no different than art in museums or in art shows. People pay to see this art but then tell others to cover theirs up. It is a form of self expression no different than someone doing their make up or curling their hair. We have a freedom of speech and self expression and when you ask someone to cover up their bodies this violates that.

Telling people to cover up their tattoos or watch their placement needs to stop. It's offensive and it holds people back from being their true self.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
