With my very first tattoo appointment approaching, I’ve done plenty of research on what to expect from getting a tattoo. There are plenty of “Do’s”, and there are also plenty of “Do not’s.” These are just a few tips I’ve gathered from research and personal knowledge about what NOT to do when getting a tattoo.
1. Get a tattoo of your SO’s name.
Unless it’s a relative, don’t get a name tattoo. “But we’ll be together forever.” Yeah, until you’re not and you’re left with a broken heart and bad ink. I’ve seen it happen first hand. Don’t let it happen to you.
2. Rush into a face tattoo.
If you want a career in a reputable industry besides the tattooing business itself, getting a face tattoo sadly might not be the best choice in the world. If you want a tattoo someplace so highly prominent, think about it first.
3. Show up to your appointment intoxicated.
Whether that means drunk, high, or both, don’t walk into a tattoo shop after using drugs or alcohol. Drunk clients are often rude to their artists, and many places may even refuse you service unless you're sober.
4. Be rude to your artist.
Being rude to anyone is awful, but being rude to the person who is responsible for permanently marking your body is just plain stupid.
5. Get a cheap tattoo.
You get what you pay for, and if you go to the cheapest shop you can find, you’re going to get cheap art that you’ll regret. Suck it up and shell out the money for an experienced artist.
6. Get inked on an impulse.
If one day you wake up and decide “Hey, today I’m going to get a tattoo”, and then you do, you may not be too pleased with the results in a couple of weeks. Something that seems like a great idea now may not seem like a great idea when you’re out to dinner with Grandma. Give yourself at least a month or two before settling on an idea.
7. Don’t tip.
Your artist is putting their time and effort into making a piece just for you, and your tip should reflect that. The average tip for a tattoo artist is 10%-20%. Let your tip reflect how much you love your new tattoo, and make sure to thank the artist.
These are all just suggestions of course, (some more important than others), so if you truly want to get the name of your boyfriend of two months inked on your forearm, go for it. The most important advice I have is simply to enjoy your experience!
