Today, the acronym FOMO is a widely used and recognized term. For those who are behind on social media's trendy hashtags, FOMO stands for Fear Of Missing Out. This type of emotion is summarized as the fear you will miss out on something huge if you don't do something and/or participate in an event. It may seem silly to some, but no one has ever enjoyed missing out, and now we have a catchy phrase to describe it.
Throughout the time that this phrase has been alive, people have experienced many uses for it. Perhaps you have to work during a tailgate and football game, maybe you are viewing photos of a friend's time abroad, or maybe you're just not feeling well enough to go out with your roommates. Whatever the reason, we have all been there.
But what if you were feeling this way not because you had to work or had a cold? What if you experienced FOMO because you were so embarrassed of your body that you held yourself back? What if all your friends were going to the beach and you were too self-conscious to accept the invite? What if you made plans to swim at the public pool, but when you tried on your swimsuit, you couldn’t convince yourself to leave your room? These can all lead to the fear of missing out, so maybe FOMO isn’t just a silly phrase after all.
Leave it to Target to come up with a beautiful, empowering movement for all the girls out there feeling that they might experience a bit of FOMO this upcoming bikini season. Earlier this month, Target launched a #NOFOMO campaign that is "all about shaking off body insecurities and not letting anything get in the way of having fun in our swimsuits."
Yes, Target, yes! This iconic brand realizes that they want every single body to look and feel confident and comfortable in their suits, because what is a “perfect” beach body, anyway?
Hundreds of girls across the United States have come together under the #NOFOMO movement, sharing their struggles, stories, advice and amazing bodies. Thanks to companies like Arie, Barbie, and now Target, it has never been a better time to post a selfie in that itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini.
Cheers to you, Target, and cheers to all the beautiful women liberating and building each other up in this society that sets high standards, causing low self-esteem. No girl or woman should ever miss out due to being insecure of her body. This campaign is Target's plan to abolish #FOMO from our vocabulary this
summer, promoting their flattering, feel-good suits available in sizes 2 through 22. The most stylish accessory you can rock is your confidence! #NOFOMO!
