Staring at a blank screen, looking at the pages, seeing visions for yourself, visions of where you want to go, and realizing all the hard work it will take to get there is a feeling everyone gets from time to time. Following the steps to get to what you envision for yourself may seem like jumping off a cliff daily, but how many of us have done that? Running through the park on a hot summer day and reaching your destination after buckets of sweat have poured from down your face might be a better one. The feeling of accomplishment and delight when you finally stop and put a bottle of ice cold water to your lips as you tilt your head back and close your eyes, absorbing the rays of the sun is precious. You did it. You finished for today. I will see you again tomorrow, says the sun, the park, your shoes, and the ground, taunting you. But you feel like a winner because you did it. You did something that gives you tangible results. You know you were successful, and you know you will try again tomorrow.
Taking everything one day and one step at a time takes so much patience. Your end goal may fluctuate. It may change from day to day, season to season, year to year. Everything we do, however, all gets put towards that end goal, even if the goal itself is not defined. Maybe the end goal is not anything we will ever reach in this lifetime. Maybe we will never figure out what our said "purpose" is, at least when it comes to a tangible job. Maybe our purpose is something deeper. Something so deep that we are never able to define it in words. Something so fulfilling that we can't help but live out our purpose despite never acknowledging we fully understand it. On the other hand, maybe the act of discovering each of our purposes is so simple that we are looking right past them, like one would do with an obvious answer to a physics or calculus problem. Any simple answer must be wrong, right?
Reasons for doing what we do might not always be within the realm of intellectual reasoning. It might not even fit in the category of feeling right. Not everything we need to do will feel right. Not everything that is being put towards the collective goal of discovering and living out our purpose will feel good. Why do we aim for something higher? What is the something higher we are aiming for? Not everyone knows. Maybe no one can know for sure until their life is nearly over and they can look back and reflect on everything they have done, every accomplishment under their belt, every little conversation they had, every relationship they formed, and all the beliefs they held.
Maybe all we need to do is follow our visions, each vision we have each day, even if they are constantly changing. Maybe that is the path to serving our God-given purpose. Follow Him, and be open to His ways. Be open to the change and be open to His purpose for us, even if we don't know what it is. He is in charge, and we need to do our part and live the life He has given to us. Our lives are not static - they are subject to change. We can be the change. We pave our paths and we follow them.
