For years people have referred to their dogs as “Mans Best Friend” an article on Yahoo News has taken this friendship to the next level.
Getting home from work, casually walking around the house, or even coming home after a long vacation your dog is always happy and excited to see you. With this you say “I missed you”, “I love you”, but little do you know your dog understands exactly every single word coming out of your mouth.
“Researchers in Hungary scanned the brains of dogs as they were listening to their trainer speaking to determine which parts of the brain they were using.”
“They found that dogs processed words with the left hemisphere and used the right hemisphere to process pitch — just like people.”
Although the dogs could not understand every word, they did understand the words that were being spoken to them in a positive, upbeat voice that seemed as though the trainers were giving them accolades.
“Dog brains care about both what we say and how we say it,” said lead researcher Attila Andics, a neuroscientist at Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest, said in an email. “Praise can work as a reward only if both word meaning and intonation match.”
The researchers testing these theories had thirteen dogs: six border coolies, five golden retrievers, a German shepherd and a Chinese crested. Using a technique called functional MRI also known as fMRI, this is used to record brain activity.
For this activity these dogs were trained to lie motionless in the scanner for seven minutes during the tests. They lay there unrestrained as their trainers spoke to them.
Although to a common dog owner, knowing that your dog understands you does not come as such a surprise, to a scientist doing research this is a very big break through.
There is lots of love for these furry creatures out there, and this just makes people love them that much more!
