Why We Still Need To Be Talking About Mass Shootings

We always want answers after mass shootings, but we can't prepare for the unexpected.

Why We Still Need To Be Talking About Mass Shootings

Guns kill people. So, do spoons, knives, and forks. This isn’t a politically charged article of why guns are needed. This isn’t an article of why gun control is necessary for our society. Whenever a massacre has happened, debates begin to form over whose political agenda is right. People want answers to such a heinous crime and the finger pointing begins.

It's toxic masculinity.

It’s the rise of single motherhood.

It’s what happens when you take prayer out of school.

It’s the parent's fault.

It’s the teacher's fault.

It’s the immigrants.

It's crazy white people.

It's crazy black people.

Its Hollywood’s fault for glorifying guns and making it seem cool to kill.

It's mental health. It’s the police for not protecting the innocent.

It's why America is going to hell. On and on, we find ourselves in a circus of opinions trying to cipher through and justify an act of hatred.

Sometimes the answer that we seek isn’t always what we want to hear. This was another act of pure evil in the heart of an individual. There isn’t a true explanation for these actions and we can’t truly prepare ourselves for these moments. We could allow teachers and school administrators to carry a firearm for safety. We could teach students how to be mindful of their surroundings and what to do in case of a potential gunman attack.

At the end of the day, no matter how careful we are in being proactive towards these situations, you could never truly prepare for what is going to happen. It is just like fire drills. We practice year around what to do when a fire occurs; the bell rings, line up at the door, and “peacefully” walk in a straight line outside.

We practice what to do under safe and calm circumstance. Students become so conditioned thinking that this is another drill that when a real fire happens and true danger is imminent, their reaction becomes completely different.

No matter how much preparation and planning goes into stopping school terrorism, evil will always find a way to wreak havoc on society.

So, what do we do?

Should we allow guns in schools for safety? Should we plan out drills for what to do when the school/campuses are under attack? Do we sit back and pray hoping the gunman skips over your classroom?

Each case is different and every state has different laws the oblige by. We must be proactive in voting for leadership in our schools, districts, and country that will make it a priority to instill safety in the minds of the people there will be no more innocent blood loss due to passive reactions and ineffective procedure.

Leadership that will not use the underfunding or low budget as an excuse to not hire certified counselors or nurses to deal with mental health. Leadership that understands something must be done whether it is gun control or the right to carry in a school district.

How many more innocent people must die before leadership takes School, campus, church, clubs, movie theater, shopping center, and daycare shooting serious?

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
