Prayer, it's an essential part of many religions. Including, in no particular order: Abrahamic Religions (Christianity, Judeism, Islam, and Baha'i), Animism, Eastern Religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, Shinto, etc.) and several others. However, we hardly ever talk about it despite asking for these prayers when something bad happens.
I remember asking a family member and getting such a violent response. They were very angry, with me, snapping, "Of course I do. Don't ask people that, it's rude." I just kinda fell into a shocked silence, and I haven't really been able to get the conversation out of my head. I understand that perhaps maybe it can come off rude if asked in an disrespectful tone.
But why is is disrespectful? Yes, if one doesn't pray often they might feel a bit of guilt for not praying, and they can be praying for something they might not want you to know about. So it could come off as nosy, but if people don't necessarily have to tell you what they are praying about. They could just not want to talk about it, but there are nicer way to tell people that you don't want to talk about then biting people's heads off.
Maybe the person you're asking isn't religious, but that's perfectly normal. Start a conversation about what they believe in, if they do believe in something. It's a conversation not an interrogation. Prayer is such an important part of religion, shouldn't we talk about it more?
Here, I'll go first. I don't pray that often, I try to. But sometimes I just forget or I find that I don't really have anything to pray for. One of my co-worker's cousin got into a car wreck so I prayed for him. My family has prayed over a few dinners whenever we eat together. A few days ago, my grandmother hurt her back, so I've been praying for a fast and speedy recovery.
That was easy and virtually painless- So, what about you? What do you pray for/about?
