Every so often, a movie comes along that all your friends are talking about, and continue to talk about for months. Everywhere you go there are posters, books being sold, trailers, and talk about a movie that can affect us greatly. In September of 2012, that movie was Perks of Being a Wallflower. Perks is about a teen boy going through the motions of high school, finding new friends, and making memories. Unfortunately, he has past experiences that come back and affect him. It was a beautifully written book turned into an indie movie, thrusting the genre into mainstream media for younger generations. Indie movies aren't talked about as much as they should be if they don't have large budget actors, but here are some indies that weren't talked as much.
1. The Spectacular Now
Miles Teller's character, Sutter, is dumped from being the life of the party, to trying to get his life together in time for college app due dates. He meets nice-girl, Aimee, whose outlook on life is changed when she falls in love with him. Aimee is always thinking of the future while he only wants to live in the moment. After falling apart, Sutter finds a new philosophy to life.
2. The Way, Way Back
14 year-old Duncan gets hired at a water park where his family is vacationing for the summer. While he is belittled by his step-father, he is taken under the wing of his boss. He sees a lot of new drama for the summer and learns to stand up for himself.
3. Stuck In Love
Rusty and Sam have different perspectives on love. Sam is cynical while Rusty is a hopeless romantic. They both find different love, and even though they are stubborn in their views, they go through changes that affect their meaning of love forever.
4. Boyhood
Boyhood is interesting because it was shot over the years of the cast members growing up. It follows Mason from a young age, until his first year of college. He experiences life with divorced parents, a new family, puberty, a girlfriend, and a heartbreak.
5. The Kings of Summer
Three boys trying to escape their parents, build a house in the woods and spend the summer together. The three of them learn to live on their own but go through the frustrations of responsibilities, girls, and being with each other all the time.
6. The Kids Are Alright
