This past June I was glued to my television after I made the impulsive decision to watch Outlander. Did I really need a new show to obsess over? No. But since I was waiting for the new season of Game of Thrones to air, I decided to give the Starz original series a shot. Time travel was never really an appealing concept for me, but nevertheless I was curious to see what all the rave was about. What could go wrong?
Needless to say, I'm not sure how it happened but I ended up watching two seasons of Outlander in a matter of a couple of weeks.
Do I regret it? Hell no.
But we should talk about Jamie Fraser. I don't think I've ever yelled at so much at my television to a fictional character who will sadly never know of my existence. This man fits the definition of delightful in every single way.
Besides the additional internal screams that are ensued because of the beauty of this man, Jamie's devotion to his family - especially his wife, Claire - is what ultimately had me falling for him. As Laird of his clan, Jamie risks everything to protect the people he loves. He fights for what he believes is right and doesn't stop even as blood spills from his body. One of my favorite lines by far is when Jamie tells Claire, "you have my name and my family, my clan, and if necessary, the protection of my body as well" (Season 1, Episode 7).
(If that gif alone doesn't make you want to watch Outlander, I don't know what will).
There is a certain kind of kindness and acceptance instilled in Jamie Fraser that allows people around him to be truly themselves, without any judgement. He didn't even miss a blink when his wife revealed that she was from future.
There's also the old Gaelic language that just flows so beautifully out his mouth. The Scottish Highlander had me googling Gaelic expressions and use them in every sentence where it was possible. But alas, I just had everyone confused.
Even the wit and the humor actor Sam Heughan brings to life is always captivating. The banter between Jamie and Claire never ceases to be fascinating. The two complement each other so well that it leaves viewers needing more.
The wait for season 3 to arrive has been gruesome to say the least. While #Droughtlander has been going on for too long, I've immersed myself in several interviews (and by several, I mean all of them) that Sam Heughan has been in. This Starz series has definitely been a show that resonates in my soul. And dare I say it - it's even better than Game of Thrones.
But dinna fash, sassenach! Be sure to catch the all new season of Outlander on September 10th only on Starz!
