Let's Talk About The Met Gala

Every year, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City holds a gala to showcase a new exhibit based around fashion and clothing. There is always a theme, with last year's theme being "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination." It's one of fashion's biggest nights, and every major celebrity attends. It's a day where fashion designers and brands are able to go all out in their garments. Notable outfits from last year's gala include Rihanna's Pope ensemble, Cardi B's Virgin Mary inspired look, and Zendaya's incredible ode to Joan of Arc.

But this year, the theme took the Met Gala to a new level. For the event on May 6, attendees were to dress to the theme of "Camp: Notes on Fashion." What is camp? According to Susan Sontag's 1964 essay on the genre of fashion, "Camp is the consistently aesthetic experience of the world. It incarnates a victory of "style" over "content," "aesthetics" over "morality," of irony over tragedy." Among the other 58 points Sontag highlights, this one seems to encapsulate Camp the best. It's a production, it's ugly, it's art.

It also has a huge influence on LGBT and drag communities all over the world. Drag Queens are the epitome of Camp in the modern world--their over-the-top looks are what camp is in its essence.

So, the day comes and it's time for the biggest names in the fashion, film, and music industries to show what they've prepared for the show.

And it's overwhelmingly disappointing.

Don't get me wrong, there were some who knocked it out of the park, but most celebrities and other attendees looked lackluster. Let's go down the list, shall we?

First, we have Lady Gaga, one of the co-chairs of the night. She emerged in a huge, pink gown and proceeded to put on a 16-minute show where she revealed three more outfits. She finished in a bra and high-waisted underwear complete with jewel-studded tights and platform heels. She was camp. She killed it.

A few others also blew the theme out of the water; Billy Porter entered the pink carpet carried by six shirtless men. He wore a decadent gold onesie complete with golden wings. Known for his other gorgeous red carpet looks this year, it was expected of him to burn the house down with his look.

Another notable look from the night was Ezra Miller's... ensemble. It's hard to describe what exactly he was going for, but the diamond corset and five additional eyes sure turned some heads that night. Miller is known for his greater-than-life personality and eclectic everyday style.

There were a few others who did a good job, but let's talk about the ones who didn't. It's often joked about how little men invited to the Met Gala put effort into their looks. The notorious "black suit" appears every year, no matter the theme. Unfortunately, this year was no different.

Here's a short list of men who wore boring, black suits: Liam Hemsworth, Richard Madden, George Clooney, Shawn Mendes, Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Rami Malek, and so many more. It's almost an insult to the Met itself for wearing such a boring, run-of-the-mill suit to the biggest night in fashion. As Tan France says, make an effort.

All in all, the Met Gala this year wasn't anything too out of the ordinary. There were major wins and too many losses. I hope that in the future, designers work with celebrities more to really work toward making an outfit that follows the theme of the Gala. It's a shame that the biggest names in fashion put out the same three-piece suit every year. Things need to change for 2020.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
