What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? What about the last thing you do before you go to bed?
My answer: check social media.
Did you have the same answer? I'm not surprised.
Today, it feels like the world revolves around social media. Where would we be without Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and so on? Well, we would probably never have to hear our grandfather go on another rant about how "us millennials never look up from our phones." But maybe if we did look up from our phones and listened to those rants, we would realize they are right.I love my social media, I have no idea what I would do if I had to just completely stop using Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook or any other social media I use basically every day. It has become a lifestyle, a part of my daily routine for me. It is how to keep up with my friends and favorite celebrities. It is how I heard about daily news, the good or the bad. I cannot imagine giving it up and going cold turkey, but a friend of mine did and here is what he has to say about giving up social media.
I asked Jon Rospenda if he liked life better without social media and his response,
"I do like life better without social media I don't feel like I need to have my phone in my hand 24/7 recording everything I do."
Then I asked him if he ever misses his old social media or if he ever feels out of the loop, his response,
"I miss Snapchat sometimes because sometimes people do post funny things that I don't get to see but on the flip side I don't have to worry about catching up on everything and I feel like if it's important enough they will tell me. I do feel out of the loop sometimes but not nearly as often as some people think, it's stress-free and again if it's that funny or important people will show me. It has taken a minute to get used to the no social media but I think it gets easier the longer you go."
Finally, I asked why he decided to give up social media and if he would recommend it to anyone else, his response,
"I chose to give it up to focus on bettering myself and enjoying the "best years of your life" college days. I feel like people are too glued to their phones so I just wanted to cut out all distractions and focus on living a life I'm satisfied with and not constantly comparing my life to others.
I would absolutely recommend it to everyone, I don't plan it to be a permanent thing but I feel like at this point in my life I have too many other responsibilities and things I need to do and social media has only been a distraction which makes it hard to achieve my goals. I want other people to do it so they can see how much better life is when you are not constantly worrying about snaps likes and shares. I just don't want to miss what's going on right in front of me because I was looking at my phone."
After talking to Jon I got to thinking, maybe taking a break from social media wouldn't be a bad idea, it seems to be working out for Jon. There is so much happening right in front of our faces every day that we miss because we are on social media. I don't want to take this time I have on this beautiful earth for granted, I don't want to miss the amazing things happening right in front of my face. Lets put our phones down and officially be in the moment, the moment we will never get back.
