Over winter break, my friend and I ranted about the winter. In Chicago, it hit single digits for an entire week - and the term winter blues definitely took on a whole new meaning. So, to combat our wintery blues, my friend and I decided to come up with a plan.

We googled ticket prices, searched up Airbnb, and ultimately randomly choose a city and a flight - the cheapest one we could find. It happened to be Fort Lauderdale, and my mom laughed when I told her I had booked a flight to Florida for spring break.

Yet, after 3 days in 80-degree tropical temperatures, I write from a plane ride back to snowfall and winters chills. As my friend snores beside me, I’d say we had a successful adventure.

Some travel advice from someone who rarely leaves the Midwest:

1. The sun is different in Florida.

My friend and I may or may not have all the symptoms of sun poisoning, and while falling asleep underneath the warm rays seems like a dream come true, our pasty Chicago skin isn’t used to UV indexes of 9 on a normal day.

2. Find an Airbnb/resort/hotel close to the beach or activities you know you want to do.

Vacation spots are usually unfamiliar, spread out, and confusing and Uber’s are expensive.

3. Uber pool

It may be longer but it’s also cheaper, and being a broke college student calls for compromise. Also, odds are no one will join you on your ride.

4. Pack snacks

I hear pretzels and peanut butter is a filling option....soaking up the sun and exploring the area is often draining and calls for much-needed refueling.

5. Relax and rejuvenate and of course, have fun!

Spring break adventures are one of the few times where you have no obligations - just time to be with your friends/family and forget about the midterm grades and assignments waiting for you at wherever your college home is.

Although my shoulders are lobster red, and it hurts to bend over, I am more than grateful for crazy Uber rides, long hours on the beach, and late night adventures this spring break. Being in college can be the perfect time to check another place off your bucket list with your friends.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
