Trust Me, You Won't Miss Gaps By Taking a 'Gap Year'

Before my senior year of high school, I thought the idea of taking a gap year was ridiculous. I did not struggle in school, I wanted to be at college more than anything and I felt like if I ended up taking a year off that I would never go back. However, I totally proved myself wrong and now I am way more excited to be at school and learn than ever before. If you're considering taking a gap year, you absolutely should and here's why!

You can give yourself a well-deserved break from school.

You just spent the last 12+ years going to school every year, let yourself breathe a little bit! Your brain will thank you.

It’s the perfect time to travel!

There are tons of gap year travel programs you can sign up for, but if you're on a budget then you have so much time to work until you can afford to go somewhere epic!

College is expensive, so why waste your money taking classes if you don’t even know what you want to do?

If you're in between majors or literally have no idea what you want to do when you grow up, then take a year to figure it out. I guarantee you'll learn more about yourself during your gap year than you would at a university.

Working a full time job definitely makes you a lot more mature and responsible.

Plus, you're going to make tons of money. Who doesn't love money?

It’s a great chance to build up your resume.

Do some volunteer work, try out a few jobs or internships, or do traveling volunteer activity. Colleges and jobs would love to see this out of young people.

Didn’t get into the schools you wanted? That’s okay!

Try re-applying during your gap year. This is a second chance for you to win them over with new essays and a more well-rounded and better-presented application.

Spend some time with your family.

Watching children move away from home is one of the hardest things parents ever go through, but most of them would love to spend just one more year with their kids!

Take some time to find a new hobby or skill.

In your newly found free time on your gap year, you could learn to paint, start going on runs or get a new furry friend. The possibilities are endless!

Give yourself some time to relax and be stress free.

High school might have been very stressful for you. Between homework, sports, work, school, clubs, whatever you did, treat yourself quite a bit with removing the stress from your life

You won’t be hating school once you go back.

Take it from me, I am just starting up my freshman year after taking a gap year. I have never felt readier to learn, succeed and follow my dreams than ever!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
