1. There will be a lot of scoring
The UGA basketball team scored 110 points on November 9, in a win over Savannah State. This was the highest scoring total for the Bulldogs since a 1999 win over Grambling the the Great Alaska Shootout. The Dawgs put up 77 in a losing effort against Temple in game number two. 77 may not seem like that many points, but on a night where the team was outplayed and struggled to get good shots, it is a solid mark.
2. The rotation is wide open
In game one against Savannah State, coach Crean played 15 different players. In game two against Temple he played 13 guys. It is clear that the new head coach is still trying to figure out his lineups in the early going and that certainly is not an easy task considering some of the top players from last season are not returning. The starting lineup has not changed over these two games and it has consisted of:
William (Turtle) Jackson II
Teshaun Hightower
Rayshaun Hammonds
Nicolas Claxton
Derek Ogbeide
The regular backup spots are up for grabs in the early part of the season. We will see soon who takes those positions full time.
3. No clear #1 scorer
In game 1, the leading scorer was Teshaun Hightower with 18 points followed by Claxton with 15. Game 2 saw Ogbeide and Tyree Crump lead the team with 16 a piece.
This team is obviously still searching for an identity. Will they be a team that pounds the ball in the paint or will they be a volume three-point shooting squad? We do know one thing though, transition is the name of the game for these Dawgs.
4. Rim protection is not a problem
Georgia has had 13 blocked shots over this two-game span. That is an average of 6.5 blocks per game. The length that this team has with both Claxton and Ogbeide up front will be more than enough to intimidate opposing teams and alter their shot attempts. Defense was one of this team's strong suits last season. They will be very successful this year if they can keep up the scoring pace and find that defense consistency of last season.
5. Teshaun Hightower is a key player
Last season, Hightower was an intriguing prospect with tons of passion and energy to spare. He began to get his chances in the rotation towards the end of the year as the primary backup to Turtle Jackson. Now he is starting alongside Jackson. Hightower looks to be a crucial part of the offense and has now taken on more of a scoring role with Jackson doing the facilitation. His development within the offense will be something to watch for as the year goes along.
6. Tyree Crump needs to see the floor
Crump has quietly been one of the most important players on the team during his career at Georgia. He finished the Savannah State game with 4 three-pointers and hit two in the Temple game. He is, by far, the best pure shooter on the team. The struggle with Crump has been finding a consistent role for him on the team. It looks like the way that Tom Crean wants to use the sharpshooter is in a bench role. Crump will be tasked with being the spark plug of this scrappy UGA basketball team, a role he has filled very well so far.
