Listen, I know many of us are supposed to be too old for cartoons anymore, but I recently watched A Goofy Movie and realized that it was probably the most lit Disney movie of the 90s. In a world where kids grow up on a show like SpongeBob (heard it was getting cancelled btw), A Goofy Movie is what we should be showing our youth to teach them what a real cartoon looks like. A Goofy Movie has good music, a plot, and message. That's already better than most of the cartoons on television in the 21st century.
First and foremost, the characters. Max Goof is the 90s kid I wanted to be, despite him being a dog and a boy. He skateboards, sings, and goes to great lengths to get the girls, well one girl. Roxanne. (Dressing up as Powerline during the school assembly - ICONIC). He has the perfect amount of teen angst and awkwardness to be one of the most underrated cartoon characters of the 90s. Where were the Max Goof costumes when I was a child? I feel like I got ripped off. In the movie, there's a scene where the principal calls Goofy after Max's stunt during the assembly and refers to Goofy as "Mr. Goof" so I'm assuming Goofy's name in real life is Goofy Goof (Good one, Disney). Goofy is every dad that desperately wants to hold on to their son but has to loosen the reigns for their boy to grow into a man. If you don't remember the car scene where the father-son duo is waiting for the soup to heat up, watch it and tell me it doesn't make you think of time passing with your family. Disney truly makes these dogs seem human, man.
All of the characters, including Max's friends and the people they meet along the way, give the movie a unique softness. Something you can chuckle to but also reminisce in a way that makes you miss the kid that you once were. Bobby (cheese wiz kid voice by Pauly Shore - for future 90s trivia reference) is the friend that was always down for mischief and mayhem. How else would Max have been able to pull off the bootleg Powerline concert in the auditorium? Roxanne is the girl everyone in school knows and tries to be with but she likes the goofy (no pun intended) kid that makes everyone laugh. Everybody can find SOMETHING in A Goofy Movie that they can relate to their preteen years.
Music is everything and this movie has a kickass soundtrack. Powerline aka Tevin Campbell sings "Eye to Eye" at the end and it's still better than half the music being released today. The choreography is clutch as well, I'm still trying to get the "perfect cast" down so I can get like them. If you haven't seen it in a while, watch it. If you've never seen it before, watch it. Seriously, it's like an hour and some minutes. And if you have kids, definitely introduce them to the good cartoons. It's basically Grease for kids anyway.
