Earlier this week, an unusual event took place in the House. The Democrats initiated a rare sit-in, demanding that they deserve to have a vote on gun laws. Although this act was thought by many people to be "dramatic," it did what it was intended to do. Although the sit-in did not sway many votes, it did bring attention to this issue at hand. Whether you are pro or anti-gun, you can agree it was unbelievable to see that doing so little as sitting on a floor for over 24 hours can make a change that affects millions of people. Clearly, some issues need to be solved surrounding the policy of gun control, and this sit-in was an excellent start to initiate change. These representatives in the house were brave enough to push aside their pride to make a point: they wanted change.
The recent incidents involving mass shootings have plunged Congress into long debates over the issue of gun laws. Unfortunately, the efforts of those wanting change are present, but the outcome does not seem promising. It's astonishing that even after all the events that have happened recently and the many of lives taken, everyone isn't on board for change! No matter what that change be or in whose favor it be in, something must budge to avoid more destruction and death. Voicing your opinion may be easier with all the resources we have acquired throughout the years, but the opposition to these views has grown as well.
During the sit-in, significant changes were being discussed as to how gun laws have changed this nation. We are not the same people we were when we wrote the 2nd amendment and our guns have drastically changed as well, shouldn't that be reason enough for our gun laws to change. During the sit-in, Democrats discussed new legislation in hopes of gaining Republican support but ultimately failed. One of the main issues the Democrats were trying to get passed were stronger background checks for potential buyers of firearms. The Democrats sadly achieved solitary success from this sit in, but they did, however, give hope for the future.
These representatives were doing what they thought was best for this nation. They took a stand by taking a seat on the floor of that House, and that is the change that is needed. It is not easy to go on this particular issue, but these men and women were willing to, to grab everyone's attention and voice their opinions on what should happen to create a nation that you can be proud of instead of scared. Don't be afraid of showing others what you will do to draw attention to what needs discussion. They weren't afraid; you shouldn't be either.
