It’s hard to believe that half of the semester has already flown by and it’s already midterm time. This means zombie-like students will be making their way to classes and many will fall asleep in the library, among many other public places. Midterm week is also the time that finding a seat at the library turns into The Hunger Games. (The phrase "May the odds be ever in your favor" has never been more appropriate.)
Unfortunately some of us push ourselves too hard and end up getting sick because of it. Lack of sleep combined with a poor diet and loads of stress results in a weakened immune system. It’s just as important to stay healthy in times of high stress as it is to get a good grade on your midterm.
So take a break and look at the bigger picture: In addition to taking care of business, you need to take care of yourself. This means planning ahead so you aren’t pulling all-nighters before tests and instead get a good night’s rest so you can think clearly for the exam.
It’s also equally as important to take a break while studying. This could mean going for a run or just reading a book. But students need to take breaks so they can keep concentration while studying.
It’s also okay to say “no” once in a while especially during midterms. I’m the type of person that likes to say “yes” to everything and sometimes I get a little overwhelmed because of it. I am lucky enough to have a flexible work schedule and I’m sure to cut back hours because I need time to study. This way I’m not staying up late on weekdays and when I get to the actual test I am focused and ready to go.
A good night’s sleep and healthy meals beforehand are more important than most people realize. I have watched people struggle to keep their eyes open or actually make themselves sick because they stay up for days at a time, studying nonstop. Don’t be that person running to the bathroom after a test because you’re going to be sick. Just take a step back, take a deep breath and remember that everything will be okay.
Don’t wait until last minute to cram for a test and pay attention in class when the material is first mentioned. Breaks are just as important as the actual studying for a test, and don’t be afraid to take one every hour or so. It gets your mind off of things, calms you down and allows you to fully comprehend all the information you just took in.
So stay healthy this midterm season and put yourself first. Don’t be afraid to take a break, because they are well-earned.
