Take A Break

The "treat yo’ self" philosophy applies to life even during finals week.

Take A Break
Suze Benson

It's finals week at Wofford. You can't enjoy the holidays until you deal with the necessary evil known as final exams. I need to make sure I know enough Spanish to pass Spanish 201, the complicated mess of ancient Roman politics, the rise and potential decline of the United States, that guy, and a plethora of other information I have learned this semester. I can't study all of the time because like most humans, I am not the Energizer bunny of studying. I need breaks, you need breaks, we all need breaks. I've just made it slightly easier to narrow down options for what to do when you're not studying your little heart out.

On the productive end(because you can’t waste all of your time)

  1. Clean your room: I’m sure my roommate and I can take the prize for “Messiest Room in Greene.” Maybe “Messiest Room at Wofford.” Anyway, you might unearth some notes that will come in handy for one of your exams. (Note: this hasn’t happened to us. It’s bound to happen for some messy soul.)
  2. Pack: You don’t want to do all of your packing after your last exam. Hell, I regretted doing all of my packing after my last class before Thanksgiving break, so I’m definitely going to pack everything before my final exam this Friday.
  3. Stuff your face: You have to eat sometime. I highly recommend doing this with pals. Japanese food and creme puffs are both solid choices.
  4. Shower: Don’t neglect your hygiene at any time, but it’s especially important to not neglect it when you’re going to be studying in Milliken or the library. A lot of stress can go down the drain when you take a warm shower.
  5. Go Christmas shopping: I am a fast-walking introvert who normally despises the crowds of slow walkers who are always around in stores during the holidays, but holiday shopping is still a swell time when you admire all of the decorations and the cheesy Christmas music.

On the indulgent end(because sometimes you can afford some free time)

  1. Get your hair done: Dye it, cut it, shave it, or trim it-it doesn’t matter what you do with your hair. Your new hair might make you feel more confident or will keep you from being distracted(especially when your bangs are too long).
  2. Sing/dance/make art: Artistic talent of any sort is typically not exercised properly during finals week. This could even become a productive activity if you entertain your fellow stressed peers or create some gifts for your friends and family.
  3. Read/watch something unrelated to your studies: I’m not sure when my Netflix and/or Amazon Video binge is going to happen this week, but it is going to happen. It’s the easiest way to escape the reality of finals.
  4. Fall into an Internet rabbit hole: Just pick your poison: crush-stalking, Wikipedia-learning, etc.
  5. Go on a run/hike/drive: Sometimes, anywhere is better than your study space.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
